Serena to fight for equality until 'the grave'

Serena Williams can't promise she'll ever catch, let alone eclipse, Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 grand slam singles crowns after letting yet another opportunity pass with a demoralising Wimbledon final defeat.

The Romanian lifted her maiden title at the All England Club with a 6-2 6-2 hammering of the seven-time champion in less than an hour on Centre Court.

"It feels good", was the first thing she said when she walked into her news conference pointing at the purple-and-white round badge. Williams simply could not respond.

She lost the 2014 Roland Garros final to Maria Sharapova and the 2017 championship match in Paris after leading Jelena Ostapenko by a set and 3-0.

But this was the most chastening as she lasted only 56 minutes before biffing a forehand into the net - her 26th unforced error - to end the contest.

It's the second time the Duchess of Cambridge has worn this particular dress, the first was for a visit to Canada in 2016.

"So whenever a player plays that fantastic you just kind of have to take your hat off and give them a nod".

Until Saturday the only other Romanian to reach a Wimbledon final was Ilie Nastase who finished runner-up in 1972 and 1976. But after losing each of her first three major finals, Halep now has won two straight, including at last year's French Open.

"It's something very special and I will never forget this day".

Yet when Halep finally wended her way through Wimbledon's burrows and corridors to catch up with her mother she found her too dumbstruck to speak.

"I don't know", she said.

"Not being injured at this tournament was a real positive for me".

"Today nothing really helped".

"I have worked a lot for this moment, it was an honour to play in front of the Royal Box".

Since winning the first of her slams at the 1999 U.S. Open, Williams has lost only nine finals at the tournaments that make up the Big Four in tennis.

"My mom said when I was 10 that if I want to do something in tennis I have to play in the final at Wimbledon", said Halep.

Each time she hit a signature placement or teed off on a Halep serve, an error soon followed to wipe out her advantage.

Halep grew in stature and could not miss.

Critics were upset when the duchess allegedly asked fans to refrain from taking her picture.

This is the second event that they're attending as a duo, the first being Wimbledon previous year for the Women's final between Angelique Kerber and Serena Williams.

As far as American greats Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe are concerned, Williams needs to get back to basics.
