The loss dropped Australia to second on the World Cup ladder at the end of the rounds, missing out on the chance to stay in Manchester and face fourth-placed New Zealand in Tuesday's semi-final.
Australia didn't have a great day with the ball in their last group match, against South Africa, a game they needed to win to top the table and avoid England in the semi-final. The victory ended a nightmare run which saw them lose six of their last seven matches to be eliminated from contention for the final four. As I said, we didn't play these situations as well as we could have.
Du Plessis said it still was an important match for his team, particularly because it would be the last at a World Cup for some of the players who he didn't specifically name. "That's my plan after the World Cup", Gayle told reporters. It's all on them. "The MSL is such a big thing, a year ago we all really enjoyed it, especially the youngsters, and we are all very excited about it", Tahir said. That's the exciting thing about it. "We wanted to at least go home with a small smile and today we got that as a team".
"I think Australians and South Africans are quite similar in a lot of ways".
"We fought ourselves out of a bit of a hole with the bat and Davie Warner got a magnificent hundred". But Warner held firm, going past 600 runs for the tournament, with his latest century coming up in 100 balls when he edged Chris Morris for his 12th four. "Previous records show that we are the team that beat Australia most - more than any other team in Australia. Look forward to the next World Cup as well". It's going to be a massive challenge. They are favourites, the No. 1 ranked team in the world.
"Playing for your country is always special and playing with guys for the last time gives me a lot of pride". Inconsistent cricket, we had to be at our best for most of the tournament. But for us, this game is about getting two points. But having said that, it's a learning experience.
"As a team, we need to regroup", Brathwaite, who almost pulled off a trilling victory against New Zealand with a spectacular century, told reporters. "That's really important for us".
Starc echoed the sentiment.
South Africa's next major assignment is a tour of India and du Plessis said: "I feel in terms of my own game, the a year ago is certainly the best I have ever played".
