Harry And Meghan To Hold Private Christening For Archie At Windsor Castle

A second black and white photograph showed Archie in his parents' arms in the Rose Garden.

In another controversial move which is sure to upset royalists, the couple decided not to allow TV cameras in to the grounds of Windsor Castle to record the royal family arriving to Archie's christening. Queen Victoria was very keen to promote local industries and so, when she came to christen her first baby, she chose a gown made of Honiton lace, the same material she'd famously promoted by including it in her wedding dress.

For royal baby Archie's birth in May, Markle deviated from the tradition of her sister-in-law Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge by choosing to keep the birth plans private, including the hospital.

If the Duke and Duchess of Sussex checked the monarch's calendar they will know that she has scheduled appointments and have already planned her weekend ahead.

Christenings for royal children have traditionally involved a media moment or photo opportunity.

Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth had originally meant to spend the weekend with her hubby, Prince Philip, at Sandringham, where a visit to the Royal Stud was planned, but bowed out of those plans.

Buckingham Palace has not disclosed who Archie's godparents are.

Others, however, have defended the royal couple's decision, with one person sharing: "I fully support Harry & Meghan's decision for the christening to be kept private".

Jon Loughrey, 64, who said he became a royal fan following the death of Diana in 1997, also expressed his disappointment. "We should be able to see the christening", she said.

One person said "Prince William's face though" while another also called attention to the Duke's expression by saying 'Oh man, the look on Prince William's face'.

In an extra sweet touch, Diana's sisters were also included in Archie's official christening portrait, standing between Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, and Harry's brother, Prince William.

The two-month-old is seventh in line to the throne and does not have a royal title.

He followed years of royal tradition by wearing the Honiton lace and white satin robe first used at the christening of James, Viscount Severn in 2008.

The silver baptismal Lily Font was commissioned by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840 and has been a feature of royal christenings since its use in the baptism of their first child Victoria, princess royal.
