Iranians Mock Trump for Mistaking Leader with Dead Founder

On Monday, the USA slapped a fresh round of tough sanctions on Iran, including on its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top military chiefs.

"This action is a warning to officials at all levels of the IRGC and the rest of the Iranian regime that we will continue to sanction those who export violence, sabotage and terrorism", Mnuchin said.

Rouhani spoke live in a televised address on Tuesday.

The United States said the drone was in worldwide waters when Iran knocked it out of the sky with a surface to air missile.

Rouhani also questioned the logic of blacklisting supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and said it showed that Washington is "confused".

Rouhani says the decision meant the "certain failure" of the White House's efforts.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday denounced the US sanctions, saying the move reflects the "desperation" of the Trump administration.

"You sanction the foreign minister simultaneously with a request for talks", Rouhani said and called the sanctions "outrageous and idiotic". He added that the move will only unite Iranians.

Netanyahu says that doing so will "create a more stable Middle East".

"They said - came back - said, 'Sir, approximately 150.' And I thought about it for a second, and I said, 'You know what?" Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that his country, widely believed to have its own undeclared nuclear arsenal, would do "everything" to stop Iran getting such a weapon.

His national security adviser, John Bolton, said on Tuesday that Iran had an "open door" to negotiations on a revised nuclear deal as he met Israeli and Russian officials for talks on the Iranian presence in Syria. That follows a series of attacks on ships in sensitive Gulf waters which the United States has blamed on Iran - claims hotly denied by Tehran.

But Mr Trump said the only thing Iran understood was "strength and power, and the U.S. is by far the most powerful military force in the world".

President Trump has just signed an executive order to deny Iran's Supreme Leader and his associates access to key financial resources and support.

After Trump's decision to suspend strikes he initially greenlit Thursday over Iran's downing of an AmericanRQ-4A Global Hawk drone, the presidentchose Monday to announce new sanctions created to further constrict Tehran's economy, including on its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that the situation surrounding Iran was developing towards a risky scenario, the RIA news agency reported on Tuesday.

Trump said that although Washington doesn't want a conflict with Iran, the punitive financial measures were part of an effort to increase pressure on the government.

Trump said he called off a military strike against Iran on Friday after a USA drone was shot down, saying he was "not looking for war".

But the United States said the drone, a U.S. Navy RQ-4A Global Hawk, was flying over worldwide waters when it was downed. The United States also carried out cyber attacks against Iranian missile control systems last week, an action which Iran said on Monday had failed.
