Levin: Dem claims that Barr misled on Mueller report are 'truly bizarre'

Nadler's contempt threat isn't tied to Barr's failure to appear Thursday, but rather over a subpoena to obtain the unredacted report from special counsel Robert Mueller. Barr called the note "a bit snitty".

"Happy Bill Barr Day, everybody", Stephen Colbert said on Wednesday's Late Show. "The Mueller report spent millions investigating and found no collusion between Trump campaign and Russian Federation".

Barr's decision to skip Wednesday's House appearance came after the committee adopted a more aggressive format with an extra hour of questioning from committee lawyers, in addition to those from the panel's lawmakers.

Committee Republicans did not focus on Trump's conduct but rather on what they saw as the FBI's improper surveillance during the 2016 race of Trump aides they suspected of being Russian agents, as well as on the Kremlin's election meddling. "Turns out there is no collusion, there is no obstruction", said Trump.

That's probably the right thing to do since longstanding Department of Justice precedent says a sitting president can not be indicted. "He can run but he can't hide", Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries told reporters.

Barr sought to minimize the rift by suggesting the special counsel's concerns were largely about process, not substance.

Mr Barr argued that the objections to his summary should be nullified by the release of the report itself, calling the controversy surrounding the summary, and the consequent hearings, "mind-bendingly bizarre".

According to the Washington Post, when Barr and Mueller spoke, Barr challenged Mueller to identify inaccuracies. Democrats in particular have zeroed in on Trump's telling McGahn to have Mueller fired and to subsequently create a false record denying he did so. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) began by saying she was "gonna take us out of the weeds", then proceeded to take us even further into the weeds after instructing Barr which legislation he should support (hers). Sen.

"The Democrats and you folks in the media are not concerned about the report", Grassley told reporters on Wednesday. One imagines that members of Mueller's team pushed him to write a letter of complaint to Barr - a letter that, reportedly, he couldn't defend when the two men talked by phone. The Attorney General also voluntarily released the Special Counsel's confidential report with minimal redactions to Congress and the public, made an even-less redacted report available to Chairman Nadler and congressional leadership (which they have refused to review), and made himself available to the Committee by volunteering to testify this week. Barr and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein subsequently concluded that Trump, who has repeatedly called the Mueller probe a "witch-hunt", did not break the law.

Barr appeared unmoved by the criticism.

Maddow said Clinton's was the only opinion she wanted to hear on the issue.

"He's made the decision not to exonerate or prosecute".

The letter lays bare a rift between the Justice Department and the special counsel about whether Barr's summary adequately conveyed the gravity of Mueller's findings.
