The Giants stuck by Manning last season when there was nothing to play for following a 1-7 start.
Gettleman must really love Duke quarterback Daniel Jones, because he staked his reputation on him.
Dwayne Haskins is going to try and prove the Giants wrong. He's the second corner the Giants have taken on Day 3 and their third corner of the draft.
Here are some of the best reactions to the Giants decision to go off-script. Even so, they may not even be a good team. For now, though, he's heading to a fan base that didn't seem to want him.
Remember when Aaron Rodgers watched another future Hall of Fame quarterback, Brett Favre, play for three seasons?
The D line and the secondary got the most help. We were reminded that he dealt with the most dropped passes of any quarterback in the draft. Then, they passed up Lock again and filled a need by drafting Fant, who provides veteran QB Joe Flacco with an athletic pass-catcher. The back page of the New York Post bore a headline reading "Blue's Clueless" with a photo of Jones as the focus of the piece. This past season as a junior, Jones threw for 2,674 yards with 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His adjusted yards per attempt is a concern at 6.9 yards. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said in February that it's possible the team could have unknowingly given him a supplement with the drug, though the school and NCAA were investigating.
Jones was not expected to be the second quarterback taken in the field on Thursday in Nashville.
According to Tom Rock of Newsday, Gettleman knows "for a fact" two teams would have taken the Duke product before the Giants' next turn.
Haskins carried over some of that fire into his first interview after being drafted. Either way, Allen or LB Devin White will be there when the Giants pick.
Former Dallas Cowboys GM Gil Brandt had good things to say.
"I think it might take years to recover from it", Klatt said on the Rich Eisen Show on Friday. "If you can understand that and live that, you're going to be fine in any of those environments".
"The Redskins and Broncos were never taking Daniel Jones".
Jones might eventually develop into a franchise quarterback. The question is will one of the five teams picking ahead of the Giants take him?
