How Captain Marvel's Superpowers Stack Up To The Rest Of The Avengers

Yes, we're missing a charismatic villain and, yes, the final battle gets too explosion-y and long.

To prepare for Captain Marvel's extensive fight scenes, the actress trained with members of the airforce.

Oh, Internet. You've done it again.

The original Captain Marvel in Marvel Comics was also a male. As the protagonist of the upcoming Captain Marvel film, she most resembles the character that writer Kelly Sue DeConnick reimagined in 2012. We smirk condescendingly as Vers looks for information on the antediluvian search engine, Alta Vista, and there's an embarrassing pause as she and Fury wait for a CD rom drive to load. These effects are brilliant, and Mr. Jackson is great fun as the bemused Nick Fury, whose sidekick is a ginger cat with hidden depths.

Her life in distant Buenos Aires seems a glittering success but may not bear close inspection, and meanwhile there's emotional tension between Laura and her former lover Paco (Javier Bardem), a charismatic winemaker. Annette Bening does double duty as research scientist Dr. Wendy Lawson and the avatar that embodies Carol's most admired person whenever she's jacked into the Kree's Supreme Intelligence matrix. Though conceived years before the release of 2017's immensely successful Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel was left scrambling to create a female superhero capable of holding her own with the meticulously crafted MCU boys club.

This is when Carol Danvers gets a cool new haircut, trades in her classic bathing suit for the now-iconic flight suit (good work, Jamie McKelvie!), and goes from Ms. Marvel to Captain Marvel.

The argument over Captain Marvel's serious expression is part of the wider discussion about whether the movie has achieved all it was expected to. Both even include a scene of someone being tossed across a room into a jukebox. Some reviews have also highlighted the fact that the character rarely smiles and Larson has played with the theme by declaring she was told to work on her "hero face". She takes an Earth name, because Vers sounds silly. "It makes me really happy because I don't think there's anything missing from this story because of it", Brie said of the decision to keep the film romance-free in an exclusive interview with HollywoodLife at the Cinema Society hosted premiere in NYC.

"Captain Marvel isn't exactly marvellous", concludes Brian Viner in the Daily Mail.

Boden and Fleck got their start with a pair of low-budget charmers - Half Nelson (2006), starring Ryan Gosling as a drug-addicted high-school teacher, and the immigrant/baseball drama Sugar (2008).

"When my little ones are going like, 'I want to be that when I grow up, ' all that stuff impacts you". And that lack of experience shows in the film's climax.

There's also been a lot of focus on the soundtrack, which is full of empowered "90s needle drops - No Doubt's 'I'm Just A Girl" features, because of course it does. But Captain Marvel takes it all in stride, aided by some fine comrades.

Clark Gregg reprises the role of Agent Coulson as a young man, and Gregg was very excited about one thing. Compared to his appearance in The Avengers, Fury still has his hair with two eyes intact. I don't typically watch superhero movies, but you bet your sweet ass I'll be seeing Captain Marvel.

"But I'm not like them!" you'll say, if you leave the theater less than impressed by the film.
