"Reeling Reviews" Laura Clifford gives the film a C- and describes Larson's performance as particularly problematic: ".I found the whole film to be a muddle of special effects, disjointed writing and lack of humor. There have been 20 films in the so-called Marvel Cinematic Universe and none of them has had a female lead. In its opening weekend, "Wonder Woman" grossed more than $100 million at the USA box office - a record for a film directed by a female.
Even the well-regarded Wonder Woman was not without its problems, including the overemphasis on the love interest, the bloated running time, and the establishment of Diana's race of fierce Amazonian women warriors at the start - only for them to be sidelined and replaced by an all-male team of laughably bad ethnic stereotypes.
The IMAX release of "Captain Marvel" will also be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. They have a lock and key on that, we feel no commitment and responsibility to that movie at all.
Captain Marvel isn't exactly marvellous.
Captain Marvel has a lot to live up to when she bursts on to screens in a flurry of brightly glowing action this weekend.
Lynch says Marvel blockbusters have become unlikely vehicles for challenging stereotypes about what women can and can't do.
"He's making s-t up", she said about the results. Does it make you want to see the movie even more?
In a review headed with the words "It's no Black Panther", he accuses Captain Marvel of "unimaginative plotting, cut-rate villains [and] a bland visual style". The camera slowly zooms in, and Goose the cat enters the frame. The moment in which Carol makes this realization is not only the highlight of Captain Marvel, but one of the most empowering and inspirational scenes in the history of the MCU. I imagine that a lot of people think it's fun to stand up in the middle of a conversation with friends who all like Marvel movies and go "I think Avengers is everything that's wrong with today's cinema". "[Captain Marvel] is very cool, she's amusing, she's smart and she's not overly serious, but then she becomes, you know, the bomb, so it's very cool".
This volume of Captain Marvel is about Carol trying to figure out what it means for her to take on the new role.
"Our entire success is based on people that are incredibly different". Carol Danvers, unfortunately, is an inferior counterpart to the carefully crafted personas of Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. Ultimately, though, he's lying to her: Yon-Rogg is really asking Carol to avoid using her powers to her full ability, and warping her sense of the causes to which she should apply that power.
When Vers is captured, Skrull leader Talos (the excellent Ben Mendelsohn) and his crew literally get in her head, mining her shadowy past for memories of Dr. Wendy Lawson (four-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening), an Earth scientist who has developed advanced technology capable of changing the course of the war.
