- Larson herself appears mis-cast, and despite constant harping on nine months spent on physical training for the role, Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot appeared physically and visually more awe-inspiring in the action sequences.
It must validate any future films with this quirk of casting. Here the hero observes, amasses information, and weighs her options before committing, and once you adjust to Larson's rhythms, the performance feels subtle and fresh. But compared to most of the studio's other releases, "Captain Marvel" seems a little lacking in commitment, ambition, and innovation. Vers is a soldier with a rebellious streak who has a hard time listening to orders. Amnesiac Carol is largely happy in her new life until a botched mission brings the war between the Kree and their shape-shifting arch-enemies, the Skrull, to Earth in the mid-Nineties.
The wearing of flannel, the use of the Alta Vista search engine and much bopping to Garbage and Hole all place the story in the 1990s - 1995, to be exact - but confusion about identity is timeless.
While the good reviews veer closer to the centre of the critical aisle, highlighting the film's pleasures while reserving some space for their issues with the pacing and the plot, the negative reviews go all out. As Vers attempts to track down these alien intruders, she experiences flashbacks to her own life on Earth.
As we're hounded by soulless branding, Vers is pursued by the Skrulls.
"It was a game changer for me because I'd read the comics, and Carol's fierceness and her wit, and also - despite her being cocky - her humbleness too", Larson said. And if there's anything this new movie taught us, it's that if the Avengers need saving, Captain Marvel is the obvious person - woman or otherwise - for the job. For those of you who have set your peepers on the end credits of the last Avengers flick, you may have noticed that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) whipped out an actual pager to contact Captain Marvel. (Well, he IS a good guy, so maybe we should have known.) Though it's distracting to see the famously piratical character with two functioning eyes - it's like watching James McAvoy as young Professor X, wondering when he's going to lose the hair.
Larson said: "No! Are you kidding me I was so scared..." Lashana Lynch plays a fighter pilot with the badass name of Maria Rambeau; if that's not enough, her call sign is Photon.
Upon returning to the regular world, she was almost killed by Rogue, who took her powers. Zoom forward and we finally get to meet the mysterious Captain in the new film Captain Marvel. It is a condition of the film's very validity as it stands in the annals of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's lengthy cannon. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck direct a screenplay they co-wrote with Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The trio worked in quite a few swipes at sexist tropes, but not an obnoxious amount. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone has singled out its "riot-grrrl power" for particular attention, spinning it as a joyous celebration of nostalgia. Those swipes are both timely and well-placed.
Her first iteration as Captain Marvel was in 2005's House of M, though she only existed as the alias in a false reality created by Scarlet Witch.
Larson and Jackson have terrific buddy-movie chemistry, whether they're giving each other grief or covering each other's behinds.
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention a certain scene-stealing feline.
"Captain Marvel" relates the origin of hero Nick Fury summoned via high-tech pager just before he was done and dusted at the end of "Avengers: Infinity War". 'Everyone found out the same time the press found out, when I walked on the stage at Comic Con.
So where does Captain Marvel slot into the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
