Huawei Mate X: Price, Release Date and More

Samsung's take on the foldable phone was so far the best we had seen - and surprisingly, that didn't last too long. Do you think Apple will release a foldable iPhone?

It's also worth mentioning that the way the Mate X is designed seems to be a smarter choice compared with the Galaxy Fold, particularly how it needs only one panel instead of two.

Oppo does not rule-out ever releasing a foldable flagship phone.

Open and close. Open and close. The main display is 6.6-inches when folded with a more traditional 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 2480 x 1148 resolution, which trumps the Galaxy Fold's 4.6-inch front-facing display. When unfolded face-out to become more tablet-like, the screen size increases to 8-inches.

Look, no big ugly bezels! As you might expect by now, the UI auto-adapts depending upon the fold status of the screen. It also incorporates three cameras along with a push-button latch which secures the tablet when it is folded.

Even then, the Huawei Mate X is only 5.4mm thick when opened, and that's thinner than the newest iPad Pro. The Mate X's dual SIM caters for both 4G and 5G.

CCS Insight predicts foldable phones will remain a niche category until 2022.

Several other smaller companies are rumoured to present their first foldable phones at the trade fair in Barcelona this week.

Check out that "falcon hinge" design.

Despite packing such big display, the Mate X is slim and compact. At the side also, is a triple camera setup with the Leica badge.

Mate X clearly shows Huawei is a technology innovation leader, analysts have pointed out. There's a Kirin 980 processor and the Balong 5000 modem on board. LG and Oppo also made 5G smartphone announcements. Using its charger, Huawei says the Mate X can charge to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes.

The device is the company's first phone that comes with a truly beze-less display and a mechanism that slides down the entire screen to expose the dual front cameras.

Two days after Samsung announced its foldable phone, Huawei launched Mate X, their foldable device.

It's hard to convey just how cool-looking the Mate X is. It's to be noted that this seems to be the weak-point of Huawei's design as it doesn't look almost as refined as Samsung's attempt. However, as great as the screens are, it still faces the same challenges all foldable phones need to overcome.

Editors' Note: Updated at 12:13 p.m. ET with hands-on impressions from Huawei's Mate X launch event. Which could mean it's not ready yet, like all the other foldables at MWC we're not allowed to touch - or it could mean someone beat them to it.
