Huawei unveils Mate X foldable smartphone

While a foldable design and high-end specs do inflate the price, the key might lie in the Mate X's shape.

The Huawei Mate X is the second foldable smartphone to be unveiled in the space of just a few days - Samsung pipped Huawei to the post to be first to reveal a foldable device, the Galaxy Fold.

Rather than utilise a primary screen on the outside and a larger screen on the inside, the Mate X is built around a unique hinge and an 8-inch flexible screen that can be bent and used into multiple display modes as needed.

At €2299 (or around $3660.7 AUD), the Mate X comes with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage. The front of the phone when folded has a 6.6-inch display with a resolution of 2480 x 1148 pixels and aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The Mate X will run $2,600 for three cameras and three screens. This bar is there for grip, too, when you use the device as a tablet. That lets them see exactly what they are going to look like before a picture is taken.

But Huawei wouldn't be where it is today if it had been content focusing merely on China and other Asian markets.

Compared with the Samsung device, Huawei said the Mate X is also thinner when folded than it's big rival: 11mm compared with 17mm. This year we expect Samsung to release its first foldable phone, and there are plenty of rumors surrounding that.

Thomas Husson, principal analyst at Forrester Research, said the Mate X showed Huawei was an innovative technology company and no longer trailing American and Korean competitors.

The new Huawei Mate X will have two back-to-back screens which unfold to become an eight-inch tablet display, and goes on sale later this year priced at 2,299 euros ($2,607), setting a new upper limit for consumer smartphones.

Samsung Electronics examining a new naming arrangement for its next generation flagship phones following the launch of its Galaxy S10 series devices last week, a corporate source said Sunday. The Mate X will take a better photo, and look significantly better.

We believe that EE will probably be the first 5G network live in the United Kingdom around the middle of the year. This modem, as claimed by Huawei can achieve up to double the speeds of the X50 5G modem by Qualcomm and can apparently download a 1GB file in just 3 seconds.

The battery tech for the Mate X is literally two-fold, with two batteries adding up to 4,500 mAh powering the thing.

- 4500mAh battery with SuperCharge capability. Huawei plans to start shipping its first foldable device sometime in mid-2019 but admitted finding it hard to lower the cost of making the unique phone.

The Mate X is indeed a fascinating piece of technology - which we, unfortunately, weren't allowed to touch yet. Samsung only has a diagonal of 7.3 inches on its foldable smartphone and still has to leave room for that large notch in the top right-hand corner of the display.
