Mike Krzyzewski didn't rule out Tre Jones for Saturday's UVA-Duke game, but it wouldn't seem likely that we'll see the freshman point guard. The Hokies (14-2, 3-1) first face Wake Forest (which upset No. 17 North Carolina State on Tuesday night) before visiting Chapel Hill to face the Tar Heels (13-4, 3-1), who are coming off home win against Notre Dame.
Eastern finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds while locking down IN freshman guard Romeo Langford.
"How unbelievable our fans were, how locked in our team was, I'd say this was definitely a top-two (home game) for me", said Javin DeLaurier, a junior who was on the team a year ago when Virginia came to Durham and left with a win. The prospect of two straight home losses is very real for this young Duke team. "We went zone a little bit to save us and we covered it fairly well".
Barrett the only player in the game to play all 40 minutes, echoed the effectiveness of the defense without the team's best on-the-ball defender out to go against Virginia's talented backcourt. In other words, if they can beat Virginia without Jones, they can surely beat Pitt, Georgia Tech and anybody else they might have to play without Jones.
We're less than two months away from Selection Sunday yet the hype surrounding Zion Williamson has yet to subside.
ESPN Analyst and former Duke Basketball player Jay Bilas said that Jones is the best freshman defended that has every played for Coach K.
The Cavaliers pride themselves on their ferocious defense, as their 51.7 points per game is the fewest allowed in the country, and tremendous offensive depth.
Duke's Javin DeLaurier (12) and RJ Barrett (5) struggle for possession of the ball with Virginia's De'Andre Hunter, rear, during the first half on Saturday. After winning a top-five matchup here previous year, untimely cold shooting down the stretch - and their struggles to keep the Blue Devils from getting to the rim on defense - led to their first defeat. Williamson and Barrett, the conference's top two scorers who put up a combined 44.6 points and 16.3 boards a game, will obviously be the focal point of Virginia's defensive strategy, but a key will be limiting the rest of the team's production. The Blue Devils excel in the transition game and they will definitely miss Jones when it comes to leading the break. The freshman forward had buckets on three consecutive possessions, even as Virginia kept pace offensively. Barrett took 19 shots, made 11 and finished with 30 points and five rebounds.
Jones has been invaluable as a floor leader for the Blue Devils, averaging 8.1 points, 5.7 assists and just 1 turnover in 29.3 minutes per game. They made just one.
MILWAUKEE - Sam Hauser scored 25 points, Markus Howard added 24 points and nine rebounds and Marquette rallied past Providence.
