Rafael Nadal: 'Roger Federer was unlucky in the second set vs Tsitsipas'

THE Roger Federer win came dripping in hype under the prime time lights.

I have a huge passion for Roger Federer, a great respect for Rafael Nadal and I am interested in the newcomers.

But the second seed conceded: "Stefanos is ready to win against everybody".

Tsitsipas' response showed he was still trying to come to terms with how far away he was from Nadal on Thursday night.

He is the youngest man to reach the semi-finals at a grand slam since Novak Djokovic at the 2007 US Open and the youngest to make the Australian Open semis since Andy Roddick in 2003.

In the women's competition, Japanese star Naomi Osaka stormed into the final to set up a battle with Czech comeback queen Petra Kvitova for the Melbourne Park crown and world number one ranking.

"I'd starve myself for two-years to look like you".

Describing Nadal's performance, the 20-year-old said it "felt like a different dimension of tennis".

"Really, I didn't imagine to be back on this great stadium and play with the best", the two-time Wimbledon champion said. I hope to be ready for it.

"I believe that when you are older, you lose less the tennis when you are playing less".

"It's going to be interesting".

Unseeded American Collins is another first-time Grand Slam semi-finalist, having never won in the main draw at a major before the tournament.

"His progress is incredible, the past year and a half he's come from 90th in the world to top 10". But in terms of tennis, I know I was playing well. Tonight I played so well.

"I really can't think of something positive from that match".

He said of Pouille: "It's his first semi-final at a slam but he has won against Nadal in NY some years ago, and he's made a couple of advances at the big tournaments". The Spaniard made sure that the old guard will be represented - Novak Djokovic may yet join him - in another Major final. I thought while I was answering that I was insane.

But the eighth seed has bounced back and is on a sensational 10-match unbeaten streak after claiming the Sydney International warm-up title.

The 20-year-old Greek is considered a future multiple grand slam victor and has all the attributes to become a legend of the sport if he continues on the path he is on. But I play all the shots with a goal.

But Tsitsipas jumped out to a 3-0 lead and secured the match on the first of four more match points.

Nadal was in ominous form as he convincingly beat Tsitsipas 6-2 6-4 6-0 in just one hour and 46 minutes. I knew if he got hold of a forehand, it was going to be barbecued chicken. I had some troubles here in all my career, so to be back means everything to me. I felt like my reaction time was very slow.

With that being said, the pair have met twice previously, both in finals in actual fact, and the Spaniard has emerged victorious on both occasions. Among those looking to halt Serena's charge: world number one Simona Halep, defending champion Caroline Wozniacki and US Open victor Naomi Osaka.
