Bluebloods Duke, Kentucky open against each other

Duke sensation Zion Williamson was just as impressive as expected on Tuesday night during the No. 2 Blue Devils' remarkable takedown of No. 4 Kentucky, 118-84. Instead, this team offers an astonishing breadth of players who offer all of those skills - the shooter, the floor-spreading ball-stealer, the scrappy defense man, the white dude in the corner - wrapped up into individual packages.

Barrett was 13 of 26 from the field with six assists and four rebounds, and Williamson went 11 of 13 from the field with seven rebounds. "I dug my own grave on that one".

They just struggled to deliver the knockout punch.

Duke vs. Kentucky is one half of the Champions Classic - the other half is Kansas vs. Michigan State. We gave up 51 in the second half, so he was pretty intense about that.

Jerome made six 3-pointers for the Cavaliers, who were playing for the first time since they made history by becoming the first No. 1 seed to lose to a 16-seed in the NCAA Tournament. Kenny Goins (17 points) and Joshua Langford (18 points) turned it on in the second half to help make the game close but it was too little too late.

In somewhat of a departure from its usual roster composition, coach John Calipari has the luxury of relying on a combination of experienced veterans to go along with standout newcomers.

The Jayhawks may have a new-look lineup but they do have plenty of Division I experience.

A big factor in the amount of points produced by the Spartans was their success from long range, as they sank 12 3-point shots on a 52 percent clip. "Obviously it's a great measuring stick to see where we're at, but as far as a full season and the things that we're trying to accomplish this season, that is just the first game, and kinda take it for what it is". The Blue Devils have top-tier talent no one else can match: The number one NBA prospect, the number two NBA prospect and potentially the number three NBA prospect.

No. 25 Washington 73, Western Kentucky 55: SEATTLE - Noah Dickerson scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, Jaylen Nowell added 17, and Washington rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit. There is speculation that after this season, Self could potentially leave for the National Basketball Association after a near 15-year dynasty of excellence as the head coach of the Jayhawks.

"We don't have those guys", Calipari said.

No. 24 Purdue 90, Fairfield 57: Purdue's only returning starter made sure the 24th-ranked Boilermakers had no trouble winning their season opener. Assists - Michigan St. 19 (Winston 11), Kansas 21 (D.Lawson 6). He also added in a block and a steal and only committed one turnover. And they're facing a team in the Spartans that will be a major upgrade over Division II schools Emporia State and Washburn.

But, on the first night of the season, the young Blue Devils (1-0) looked like the best team in the country and left Kentucky (0-1) wondering what just happened.

But, if Tuesday's game was any indication, Grimes could be the next freshman star at Kansas. "He was definitely a gamer tonight".

Two key guys to watch this year with a big chance to step up are Cassius Winston and Nick Ward. Keldon Johnson and Tyler Herro can knock down shots; however, it seemed to me like we are better built to slow the pace of the game down.

Kansas will host Vermont in a campus round game of the NIT on Monday, Nov. 12, at 8 p.m. on ESPN2 and on the Jayhawk Radio Network.
