The president's decision to replace Sessions with an even more devoted loyalist, Matthew Whitaker, in an acting capacity has drawn outrage from critics, including senior Democrats, who won control of the House of Representatives in Tuesday's midterms. Congress must act to ensure that Special Counsel Mueller can do his job without interference.

The AP reported that the resignation "was the culmination of a toxic relationship" between Sessions and Trump based on a few factors, but largely Session's having recused himself from dealing with Mueller's probe.

Despite demands from Democrats and ethics watchdogs that he recuse because of his past comments, Whitaker showed no signs Thursday that he meant to do so.
