Senate paves way for Kavanaugh confirmation

Republicans hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate, meaning that if all Senate Democrats oppose Mr Kavanaugh, Mr Trump can not afford to lose more than one Republican vote for his nominee, with Vice President Mike Pence casting a tiebreaking vote. He is heading to NY for a congressional fundraiser Friday but planned to be back in Washington for the final vote.

The 53-year-old is an American attorney and United States circuit judge of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia circuit.

Trump's reference to Soros, who has supported pro-democracy movements around the world and the US Democratic Party for years, appeared to aim at inciting more support and anger from the president's conservative Christian base.
Which leaves Collins and Manchin. He was the first Democrat to meet with Kavanaugh when the nominee was meeting with senators on Capitol Hill in July. He wrote: "A real profile in courage for lying liberal Joe Manchin".
