During the trophy ceremony in Arthur Ashe Stadium, thousands of fans jeered repeatedly, and both Osaka - the champion - and Williams - the runner-up in her bid for a record-equaling 24thth Grand Slam trophy - cried. I know my shots. "Actress Gabrielle Union called her "the best athlete the world has ever seen" and said Osaka demonstrated "#BlackGirlMagic & fierce determination". It's on the commercials, it's everywhere. "Maybe it didn't work out for me, but it's going to work out for the next person".
"I would have thought since Serena's been around long enough she would realise that that probably had nothing to do with her, it's her coach up there doing something", Annacone said on the Tennis Channel. Then don't talk to me, don't talk to me.
'Are you kidding me?
Just before the U.S. Open, the French tennis federation president said that the black catsuit worn this year by Williams at the French Open would not be allowed at that tournament in the future.
While this sparked a debate about sexism at the U.S. Open, the discussion was further fueled after Novak Djovokic sat in his chair shirtless for several minutes during a break in his quarterfinals match.
The way Williams lost, of course, was what stood out most in the match.
In what began a string of heated moments, Ramos issued the first of three violations to Williams for getting coaching in the second game of the second set, and while she disputed the ruling, her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou later acknowledged he was trying to send her a signal.
The interaction came after he issued a warning for a code violation relating to receiving coaching, which is prohibited in Grand Slam matches.
The crowd booed in support of Williams.
"So for me, I'm always going to remember the Serena that I love", Osaka said. I know you can't change it but I'm just saying that is not right. I was really impressed.
Williams demanded an apology from the chair judge repeatedly, accusing him of attacking her character by insinuating she was cheating. "I hope to learn a lot from that".
Osaka, playing against her hero, managed to keep her calm to see out the victory.
Ramos gave her a third violation, which resulted in a game penalty, putting Osaka 5-3 ahead.
The two-time Grand Slam champion watched on as Williams was defeated by 20-year-old Japanese star Naomi Osaka - a match that was shrouded in controversy.
"One thing I love about tennis is being out there".
"I will admit I have said worse and not gotten penalised", James Blake, the former top-ranked United States male tennis player, said on Twitter.
In her post-match interview, Williams was asked how she would explain "what happened out there tonight" and how she could have "handled it differently" to her daughter-a question players like McEnroe were never asked about their children.
