This pair of file photos shows U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano, D-Mass., left, on February 1, 2018, in Cambridge, Mass., and Boston city councilor Ayanna Pressley, right, on June 30, 2018 in Boston.

She was endorsed by fellow congressional upstart Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who knocked off veteran Rep. Joe Crowley of NY in June.

"I'm sorry it didn't work out, but that's life, and it's OK".

But primary electorates in districts where whites are now in the minority - including Capuano's - aren't impressed with such arguments.

Capuano is the second Democrat and fourth House incumbent to lose a primary for the November midterms.

Pressley refused to accept corporate PAC money and did not run any ads on mainstream television.

Pressley also upended the way candidates traditionally approach the media. Pressley on the other hand portrayed herself as an activist candidate.

Elsewhere, Democratic nominees represent a clear shift from the status quo even if they aren't as left-leaning as Ocasio-Cortez.

"To the many families like my own, it felt like it was us against the world, that felt government didn't represent us and didn't see us, change can't wait".

Pressley and other insurgents have drawn the attention of new voters whose support Democrats will need again, said María Urbina, national political director of Indivisible, a nationwide network that formed a year ago to resist Trump. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.), she later supported it. Capuano also backed Sanders' quixotic health care scheme, which would cost approximately $32.6 trillion, according to Mercatus scholar Charles Blahous.

The Florida contest immediately took on racial overtones after Republican US Congressman Ron DeSantis, who is white, urged voters not to "monkey this up" by voting for Gillum, who is black.

"It seems like change is on the way", Pressley told the crowd.

Start with the fact that Capuano is no one's idea of a moderate.

Recent polls had shown Capuano leading, and he was was ahead in both fundraising - $1.7 million compared to Pressley's almost $900,000 - and in cash on hand, $750,000 to $131,000, through August 15, the end of the pre-primary reporting period.
