Republicans, facing a possible drubbing in November's midterm elections, had hoped to use the four-day hearing to highlight Kavanaugh's distinguished career as a US Court of Appeals judge in Washington.
United States lawmakers began a hearing today on a new candidate for the Supreme Court.
So in that sense, Tuesday's start to the Kavanaugh hearings marks the natural next step in the Republicans' devastatingly successful strategy to pack the federal courts. A judge must interpret statutes as written.
Grassley ignored the Democrats' request to stop the hearing, saying it was "out of order".
Both senators were present at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, expressing their dissent to Kavanaugh's nomination, when the emails were sent.
Guttenberg, who is Jewish, has been a vocal advocate of gun control since the at Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting.
"We can not possibly move forward, Mr. Chairman, with this hearing", said Harris at the top of proceedings. But moments after Grassley opened the session, Democrats interrupted the chairman, decrying the withholding of documents and continuously asking to have the proceedings adjourned. Senate Republicans refused to consider Obama's nomination of federal appeals court Judge Merrick Garland for the vacancy.
If confirmed, Kavanaugh is expected to move the high court-which already had a conservative majority-further to the right. Obviously, they do not have the votes to block this nominee but they're putting up one hell of a fight.
Brett Kavanaugh arrived this morning with his wife and two young daughters but was kept waiting to make his opening statement before the Senate judiciary committee by yells of protest from the public and attempts by Democratic members to postpone the hearing.
"I would think that anyone who wanted to sit on the nation's highest court would be proud of their record and would want the American people to see it", said Sen. "I can't be silent when someone is nominated to the Supreme Court who would take our equal rights away". The job involved managing paper flow from advisers to Bush. Last week, the White House said it would not be releasing 100,000 records from Kavanaugh's time in the Bush White House on the basis of presidential privilege. Kavanaugh points out that most handguns are semi-automatic and cites Scalia's opinion and says he was strongly following the Supreme Court's precedent in Heller/McDonald. Video of the encounter was shared widely on social media.
President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is sworn-in by committee chairman Sen. "Judge Kavanaugh was not responsible for the Parkland school shooting that killed my daughter", he said, placing blame instead on local law enforcement and school officials.
HuffPost's Jen Bendery noted on Twitter that the two senators who could decide Kavanaugh's fate ― Sens. A rule change previous year allows the Senate to confirm a Supreme Court nominee with a simple majority vote.
