Trudeau praises McCain as an 'American patriot and hero'

He had recently announced his decision to discontinue treatment.

"My heart is broken", she wrote. He taught me how to live. "The days and years to come will not be the same without my dad - but they will be good days, filled with life and love, because of the example he lived for us".

Politicians, celebrities, and journalists paid tribute to John McCain, who died on Saturday night after a battle with brain cancer.

On August 24, 2018, John's family announced that he made a decision to discontinue medical treatment.

McCain was diagnosed with glioblastoma back in July 2017. the same type of cancer that took the life of Senator Ted Kennedy back in 2009.

The death of John McCain caused mixed feelings and triggered a heated debate over the American values represented by the Republican.

"The world is a fine place and worth fighting for and I hate very much to leave it", McCain wrote in his memoir, referencing a line from his favorite book, the Ernest Hemingway war novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls".

McCain returned home from his years as a POW on crutches and never regained full mobility in his arms and leg. On the ground he was beaten and stabbed with a bayonet by North Vietnamese soldiers. He spent two years in solitary confinement, and later gave a riveting account of his time in North Vietnam. He attempted suicide, but was stopped by guards.

However, he was unable to do so as John McCain cast the deciding vote against the repeal. He retired from the Navy in 1981. He was a conservative-leaning Republican, but gained a reputation for not being afraid to disagree with members of his own party. In 1986, he would go on to win an Arizona Senate seat. Both his father and grandfather were four-star admirals, with his father, John McCain Jr., advancing to commander in chief of Pacific forces during the Vietnam War. An icon. An American hero, "Gov. Doug Ducey tweeted shortly after the announcement of McCain's death".

As the nation mourns the loss of Senator John McCain, preparations for the war hero's funeral are underway - but one face sure to be missing from the crowd is president Donald Trump.

McCain also campaigned for the GOP nomination in 2000 but lost to President George W. Bush, who won the election.

Following Trump's recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, McCain caustically described the USA leader's behaviour as "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory".

His breaking point with Trump was the release a month before the election of a lewd audio in which Trump said he could kiss and grab women.

But former Vice President Joe Biden put it this way: "I think John's legacy is that he never quits". I have so many wonderful people on my staff.

"My father's passing comes with sorrow and grief for me, for my mother, for my brothers, and for my sisters", said Meghan in a tweet.

McCain, a giant of the Senate, died Saturday afternoon following a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer. One of his rescuers said many years later that McCain was well treated after being pulled from the lake by villagers. Your dad, you may remember when you were a little kid. That he became a friend is one of the greatest privileges of my life.

Domestic politics is often said to stop at the water's edge: that is, while overseas, politicians don't criticise the governments or leaders of their home countries.
