Liverpool’s third goal v West Ham was clearly offside, says Manuel Pellegrini

Jurgen Klopp declared Liverpool's 4-0 victory over West Ham United in their opening game of the Premier League season as a "very good start" but "not flawless".

The Reds are looking to mount a serious Premier League title challenge this term as they bid to try and establish themselves as one of the main contenders for the trophy.

City have now lost only one away game in the league - at Liverpool - of their last 21, and manager Pep Guardiola was delighted with them.

West Ham return to action on Saturday when they play host to Bournemouth. Having taken a two goal lead before half-time, Mane added a second before Sturridge scored with his first touch despite coming on as a late substitute.

"It's really important for us to get a good result".

Klopp was caught laughing at the England international's instant impact in what was a ideal all-round performance. You see things in pre-season, but it's different. "For that it was a clear start, it was good".

Even with Mane's offsides goal, the 4-0 scoreline was kind to West Ham. Manchester City just pipped them to the post in the end, but the former Chelsea man certainly played his part in what was a thrilling domestic campaign that so almost garnered a return to the glory days for the red half of Merseyside.

'You seek guidance and help from the players around you and that has worked really well up until now'.

So while the rest of the Premier League's top six were scrambling to add new players - in particular arch-rivals Manchester United - before this year's early transfer deadline, Liverpool knew exactly what they'd look like in the opener.

It seems then that Liverpool may have snapped up a bargain by landing the out of favour Stoke man over the summer, and with commitment levels of those shared by Klopp, it will not take him long to win over the Anfield crowd - if he has not done so already. We knew it was going to be hard. It was a tough game and I know I can play better than I showed.

"We are not happy, we don't want to lose 4-0, but we are sure we are in the correct way and will continue working". "In the first half we deserved to score two or three more".

"I am not complaining".

LIVERPOOL: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, van Dijk, Robertson, Milner, Wijnaldum, Keita, Salah (Sturridge, 87 mins), Firmino (Henderson, 69 mins), Mane (Shaqiri, 82 mins).

Brazilian midfielder Fabinho was one of Liverpool's marquee summer signings but he was left on the bench for the home match against West Ham on Sunday.
