Cavani scores brilliant double as Uruguay knock out Portugal

Tabarez praised the determination of his side after they withstood waves of pressure from Portugal, following Cavani's 55th minute strike, which regained the lead for Uruguay.

Portugal dominated possession but their attack did not have enough bite to break through the Uruguay defence twice, leaving their captain Cristiano Ronaldo a frustrated figure throughout the match.

"Cavani sustained an injury tonight and we will have to see how that evolves as it's not clear at this stage how serious it is", Uruguay's long-serving coach Oscar Tabarez told reporters. Crucially, though, Cavani and Uruguay had the ideal response.

Suarez and Ronaldo are both huge worldwide stars tasked with guiding their countries to the World Cup final. Subs: Sanchez 5, Rodriguez 5, Stuani 5.

Ronaldo, now 33 and still playing some of the best football of his life, failed to provide the spark Portugal needed against Uruguay. Ricardo Quaresma replaces Adrien Silva.

Following last night's game, Cristiano congratulated Uruguay, FIFA and Russian Federation for the hosting of the World Cup, while refusing to make a fuss about his future with the national team. Uruguay's deadly duo - Cavani and Suarez - combine to lethal effect!

Working alongside Suarez's guile and intensity, Cavani was able to take the game by the scruff of the neck and sprinkle his magic on proceedings.

This however, was Suarez back to his best.

Replays, however, indicated Cavani did not make a clean contact with the finish, appearing to propel the ball over the line via his face, rather than with his forehead as intended. Cavani restores Uruguay's lead with a lovely strike.

The two men have regularly come up against each other in the Spanish top flight in recent years, plying their trades for Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively. Goalie Fernando Muslera loses the ball and leaves the net but Portugal's shot misses high. But with Uruguay sitting back, Portugal did equalise 10 minutes into the second half.
