IOS 12 quietly brings multi-user support to Face ID

Apple kicked off its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in California yesterday by unveiling a series of new features for its computers and portable devices. This year, Apple is making a point to show consumers how to use their devices less.

A new Siri app on iOS 12 called Shortcuts allows you to create verbal commands that will lead Siri to perform a number of functions you pre-program.

Have you taken iOS 12 for a spin yet?

Music lovers also will be able to set up the HomePod and other speakers through Apple's Home app.

It's a very different approach from what Google and Amazon are doing with the Google Assistant and Alexa.

New features help protect users' anonymity online.

Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Creative Strategies, said the flexibility of Apple's system set it apart from others designed only for parental monitoring, offering the ability for teens and adults to impose their own limits.

Parents will be able to set limits for time their children set in apps, and get detailed reports regarding which apps are used. During that time, app notifications will be blocked from showing up on the home screen.

Instagram lets you track how much time you waste on its app, but Apple also showed that it wasn't far behind, announcing yesterday that the iOS 12 update coming this fall will include "App Limits" that helps restrict the amount of usage, according to your settings.

Of any features, this might be most important to parents. This is essentially a personalised Animoji users can create to look like themselves (or anyone they know really) and use to talk to friends.

Apple made a developer preview of iOS 12 available starting on Monday, while regular users can download a beta version of the software later this month.

Siri Shortcuts take Siri to the next level-and perhaps for the first time ever, make Siri useful. By pressing the add to Siri button, you can then say "travel plans" and Siri will read back information such as your hotel address.

At WWDC, Apple announced that it would be taking extra measures to prevent websites from tracking its users.

But third-party "wellness" app makers are complaining that Apple's tight control over its ecosystem mean they can't offer their services. Instead of typing one person's name you can type multiple.

A majority of the iOS 12 updates surround fixing the bugs of its previous mobile software, iOS 11, which was introduced in September. Pressing on a notification, you can tune how often you'll get them in the future from the app that sent it. Notifications are now grouped by type, app or topic.

All iPhone X clones out there, whether they have LCD or OLED screens, come with a bottom bezel, because nobody else wants to use pricey flexible OLED panels that are capable of hiding the display controller inside the phone.
