The attack represents Israel's largest assault on Syrian soil since civil war broke out and comes in response to Wednesday night's rocket attack on Israeli positions in the Golan heights by Iran's expeditionary Quds Force.
On Thursday, Israeli forces bombed Iranian military areas in Syria, and Israel said that this was retaliation for a recent Iranian rocket attack in Golan Heights, an annexed part of Israel that has not been internationally recognized.
Israel said 20 Iranian Grad and Fajr rockets were shot down by its Iron Dome air defense system or did not reach targets in the Golan, territory Israel captured from Syria in a 1967 war.
Israel struck back with its heaviest air strikes in Syria since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, saying it had attacked almost all of Iran's military infrastructure.

Jerusalem has repeatedly warned that any Iranian strike on Israel from territory in Syria would lead to a 'major response.' The Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said President Assad should 'throw the Iranians out'.
Both Russia and Iran have intervened in war-torn Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad.
Iran is equally committed to its objectives - turning Syria into a forward-based of direct Iranian operations and a manufacturing center for precision-guided missiles. "If we do nothing, we know exactly what will happen", Trump said.
"Assad, get rid of the Iranians. they are not helping you. their presence will only cause problems and damages", Lieberman said.
"Get rid of the Iranians and we can, perhaps, change our mode of life here", he said. The epicentre of which being Israel, given the fact that Israel now has about 300 End Time Nuclear missiles armed and ready to nuke not just every major city in the middle east but the Israeli missile arc extends to most of Europe and much of Asia.
Germany and Britain joined the U.S. in denouncing the rocket fire they also said came from Iran, while France reiterated its "unwavering support for Israel's security".
Iranian state television announced the Israeli strikes, sourcing the information to Syria's state-run SANA news agency, and described the Israeli attack as "unprecedented".
British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson condemned Iran's attacks, urged Iran to refrain from further actions that could destabilize the region, and called on Russian Federation to pressure Syria to work toward a broader political settlement. He added, "I hope that we ended this chapter and that everyone understood".
"This might be prime timing, with the Trump announcement, to try and undermine that leverage ... because, clearly, they've crushed a lot of their opposition in Syria", said Alvi.
On Thursday, Israel claimed it had struck nearly all of Iran's military capabilities in Syria after the rocket attack on the Golan Heights, which Israel annexed in 1981.
When the smoke clears, Israel's coordinated strike will likely be in comparison with its June 1982 pre-emptive strike towards Syria's air power and air protection programs in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley.
