Mike Pompeo promises North Korea future 'brimming with prosperity' if it denuclearizes

A month ahead of his summit with Kim Jong Un, Trump lauded the North Korean leader for his generosity, hospitality and awesome niceness.

In the administration's view, measures like crippling US -led sanctions against Pyongyang's critical industries brought North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to his knees - and the same policy should work with Tehran, as well.

"The significance of the Iranian factor should not be overstated". The U.S. would also want North Korea to give up any nuclear weapons it already built. "We have a shared vision for what we hope when this process is completed the Korean peninsula looks like".

One of the detainees was jailed in 2015, the other two have been in prison for just over a year.

Kim Hak-song was held on suspicion of "hostile acts" in May 2017.

Since the foundation of North Korea in 1948, the country has endured war and struggled to balance rival Soviet and Chinese spheres of influence. He was detained last May for alleged anti-state activities.

Singapore is also in the rare position of having friendly diplomatic ties with both Washington and Pyongyang. He taught accounting at PUST.

Travelling there allows Trump to avoid the DMZ, which might have appeared like home turf for Kim, while a Beijing meeting could have allowed China to exert control. Pompeo returned overnight with three captive Americans during his most recent trip.

Hours after Trump announced the location and date of what is being billed as the historic US-N Korea summit, the White House cautioned against any new provocative behaviour by Pyongyang. "We want to thank Kim Jong Un, who really was excellent to these three incredible people".

"We're starting off on a new footing", Trump said early Thursday. But the island nation was favored by most of his advisers. The group also wants North Korea to take steps to free detainees held for activities that aren't criminalized under global law, such as freedom of speech and religion or attempting to leave the country without permission. Lately, Trump and Kim have had a "warming of relations" that may extend to changes in nuclear weapons.

A Trump-Kim meeting seemed a remote possibility just a few months ago when the two leaders were trading threats and insults over North Korea's development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile tests.

On May 1, he stuns observers by declaring he would be willing - and "honored" - to meet the North Korean leader "under the right circumstances".
