Israel would not, he said, intervene in the Syrian civil war, and the only goal of any attack into Syrian territory would be to protect its own citizens. The assault prompted an extensive Israel Air Force (IAF) attack on dozens of Iranian targets in Syria.
"I presented Israel's obligation and Israel's right to defend itself from Iranian aggression from Syrian territory, against the state of Israel", he added in a statement on Wednesday evening.
Reports indicate that additional Israeli reservists have been called up, though the IDF spokesperson's unit would not elaborate.
Iranian forces in Syria had also shelled Israeli army outposts across the Syrian frontier overnight, Israel said. Playing on the discrepancy between Israeli and Iranian might, Liberman warned: "If we get rain, you will get a flood". He says: "I hope we don't see any direct conflict between these superpowers, because this is where things are going to be out of control for the rest of the world".
"Should there be another Iranian attack, we will be prepared for it", he said. "The Iranian regime's deployment into Syria of offensive rocket and missile systems aimed at Israel is an unacceptable and highly risky development for the entire Middle East".
Israel retaliated with missile strikes, reportedly launched by Israeli warplanes from outside Syrian territory.
Syria's capital of Damascus shook with sounds of explosions just before dawn, and firing by Syrian regime air defences over the city was heard throughout the night. Residents posted videos online of what appeared to be air defence missiles running bright streaks through the night sky and repored loud noises rocked their buildings.
Israel said it was in retaliation for Iranian rocket fire from the Quneitra area that it launched missile strikes on Iranian military infrastructure in Syria. The rockets either fell short of their targets or were intercepted, Lt Col Jonathan Conricus told reporters.
Israel declined to comment. "Iron Dome intercepted the rockets".
No party claimed responsibility for the attack, but Israel accused Iran of firing the rockets, saying forces linked to Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps were behind the attacks. He said Israel had responded, but did not provide details.
It is a key ally of President Bashar al-Assad and its Hezbollah forces have been helping beat back a seven-year rebellion against him. According to the IDF all Israel Air Force aircraft returned safely to their bases. "Given what is happening now in Syria, it is important to ensure the continued security cooperation between the Russian army and the Israel Defense Forces", he said.
President Donald Trump's announcement on Tuesday to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal has also caused tensions to rise.
The Israeli military placed its troops in the occupied Golan Heights on high alert and urged civilians to prepare bomb shelters. Macron would discuss the issue with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at their meeting in Aachen, Germany, later in the day.
"A military spokesman had reported last Wednesday midnight of bombardment in Golan Heights".
