Cuomo's lawyer says special prosecutor needed for former AG investigation

Voters will decide who'll be the state's new top prosecutor on Election Day.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who made himself a voice for #MeToo victims, has been accused of abuse by four women.

According to the story by Jane Mayer in The New Yorker, the women had been reluctant to speak up fearing reprisal, but two of them, Michelle Manning Barish and Tanya Selvaratnam, could no longer be silent, hoping their disclosures will protect other women. A political contribution by Kirshner to Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. was briefly in the spotlight a year ago, amid scrutiny of political donations by defense attorneys to his office. "How can it be independent if it is members of the Legislature that give them their job?"

His office has given no indication the course there is changing. "We must ensure that if the president, or any president, issues such pardons, we can use the full force of New York's laws to bring such such individuals to justice".

Sonia Ossorio, president of the NY chapter of the National Organization for Women, said she was "shell-shocked" at the news.

Hochul suggested there would be no such scrape over the attorney general vacancy. He led a coalition of state AGs suing EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt over rule changes to the Clean Water Act, and helped in the effort to protect President Obama's Clean Power Plan. Schneiderman said the company broke NY law by failing to protect employees from "pervasive sexual harassment, intimidation and discrimination".

"We're going to have public hearings; you guys will be able to come and witness, and I think this is actually a good thing", Heastie told reporters after the latest closed-door meeting on the selection process. "They haven't lost any of the lawyers who are working on the cases".

Cuomo also directed Singas to investigate whether Schneiderman may have used his staff and office resources to "facilitate alleged abusive liaisons referenced in the article".

Underwood has worked in the District Attorneys' offices of three New York City counties and was the counsel and chief assistant in the Brooklyn U.S. Attorney's office.

That upper chamber complicates matters.

But last month, that coalition, called the Independent Democratic Conference, officially dissolved.

After Schneiderman left office at 5 p.m. Tuesday, State Solicitor General Barbara D. Underwood was sworn in as Acting New York State Attorney General.

"Any conviction, or any charge for Mr. Schneiderman, is going to matter to him", said Julie Rendelman, an attorney and former prosecutor.

He will be replaced, the work of the Attorney General's office will continue and voters will, in all likelihood, forget all about him.
