Childish Gambino Goes Shirtless During 'SNL' Performance

It was accompanied by an absolutley wild, strangely violent, yet captivating music video. Childish Gambino performed live. "Don't catch yo slippin' up". He dances around giddily before taking breaks for a couple of point-blank shootings. Directed by Hiro Murai, the clip features Gambino smiling and dancing shirtless, juxtaposed by rage, gunfire, and blood splatter. His gunning down of the gospel choir singing the lyric suggests that he's exhausted of the pressure to accumulate wealth, to be performatively black, and stay spiritually uplifted in an age of gun violence. "This Is America" references numerous country's recent mass shootings from the Charleston, SC church shootings to Florida's Stoneman Douglas High School. For his opening monologue, over smooth jazz in the key of D, Glover joked about being hung up on his two failed SNL auditions back in the day.

As for SNL, for his first performance, he was introduced by Zoe Kravitz, who held a red Solo cup as she walked over and joined a party on stage, as Gambino performed the new track "Saturday". Another wrote that "Childish Gambino is what Kanye aspires to be but fails to attain".

Glover recently left Glassnote Records for RCA and is expected to release a new album later this year. Today, he is best known as the writer and creator of FX's Atlanta, which earned him a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Musical or Comedy.

Even though Glover poked fun at the series' lack of diversity, he definitely was excited to take on the iconic role. In this sketch Lando is smart, flirty, and he sings!

And in between all of that, he appeared in a new 30-second commercial for one of the most highly anticipated films of the summer, "Solo". First up, Saturday Night Live featured a Star Wars sketch with Lando Calrissian holding a sparsely attended summit. Glover has been the focus of much of the marketing material thus far, resplendent in a variety of funky outfits.
