And, well, you can't blame the two-time Art Ross Trophy champ if his standards are a tad high.
It was a gritty win, too.
Jake Guentzel continues his ridiculous postseason run; Rinne is sharp for Nashville and more in Scott Cullen's Statistically Speaking. "It looked like someone grabbed him by the back of the shirt, so maybe it was a jerk reaction". T.J. Oshie passionately defended Wilson on Thursday morning and called a three-game suspension "very extreme". Crosby didn't get a shot either, though the captain did register a pair of assists.
The 23-year-old, however, is still learning.
It brings his playoffs scoring streak to eight games, and his points total to 21, including 10 goals. This time, the review was kinder to the Penguins.
"I shot us in the foot there with that penalty", Oshie said.
Pittsburgh would then kill off the next Guentzel minor before going to work on a power play of their own that would see Pittsburgh get an opportunity with Oshie now in the box, himself. But in the postseason, the Capitals keep coming up with new ways to lose. Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier in 1988 are the last two players to reach 20 points in 10 or fewer postseason games. Niskanen got to the rush late and took Dominik Simon's initial shot in the leg. Guentzel stuffed in the loose puck behind traffic.
Pittsburgh broke a scoreless tie at 9:21 of the second period when Guentzel batted a flopping rebound past goaltender Braden Holtby and inside the far post.
Predators goalie Pekka Rinne produced 32 saves, stopping all 29 shots he faced at even strength and giving up only a power-play goal to Patrik Laine, who finally broke out of his goal-scoring drought with less than a minute remaining in the contest.
Game four of the best of seven series is Thursday in Pittsburgh. The puck glided to the left inside corner of the painted area, Patric Hornqvist made a play on it and Evgeni Malkin dove in to poke it across the line.
However, Oshie says he's been the recipient of several high hits in his career that went uncalled, and he isn't overly pleased to be without the Caps' top agitator until a potential Game 7. "It's [Hornqvist]. He's unbelievable". It gives me a little more confidence, and I'm glad.
The crowd's excitement rose and fell with each replay, but certain angles that we don't have on TV definitively showed that the puck was over the red line for a good goal.
When it didn't on that first shot, Malkin made it on his second or third or fourth, amidst a pile of players. But I thought that line was going head-to-head pretty well.
"After the whistle we walked away", Letang said. "We've just got to play really well".
Guentzel took his second penalty of the night, this time for slashing at 14:17. That nod belongs to Guentzel, who is not only leading the Penguins, but the National Hockey League in playoff points with 21.
