Check out the 60-yard rope Mayfield threw for a touchdown against Texas past year. Being the top overall pick is a win even if it means starting one's career with the Cleveland Browns.
Naturally, Twitter users didn't pass up the opportunity to remind ESPN's Aaron Goldhammer of his on-air claim.
As the saying goes, it's a quarterback driven league and that was the case in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. "What he did in my last two years with the two Big 12 championships, the leadership, the toughness and everything else, I don't think I've ever had anyone like him". The Sooners always tended to play better when they were written off than as a strong preseason favorite.
Mary Kay Cabot and Dan Labbe went on the clock to discuss the players the Browns drafted on Saturday following the completion of Day 3. They bemoaned Mayfield's lack of ideal height (a little less than 6-foot-1) and his cocky attitude on and off the field. Los Angeles has been searching for long-time safety Eric Weddle's replacement for the past couple of seasons, and they finally got their man. James is eventually expected to play a Kam Chancellor-type role for the Chargers.
The Browns did not draft a tackle after losing one of the best players in franchise history, Joe Thomas, to retirement. But there are also a healthy amount of LSU and Notre Dame players, too.
Miami grabbed Penn State's Mike Gesicki, the second tight end drafted overall with pick No. 42. Cleveland was thought to be high on North Carolina State defensive end Bradley Chubb, but instead opted for the speedy Ward, who skipped his senior season with the Buckeyes to turn pro. There's a belief that a decent running back can just be found somewhere later on, and that you definitely should think twice before giving up a first round draft pick for one. Mayfield's under-pressure ratings in the two years prior were 117.4 in 2015 and 119.2 in 2016. That said, mocking trades is a fools' errand, so I won't. They allowed 328.1 yards per game. I am ultimately choosing Gesicki because the projection in my model gives him more of a receiver-like output in the Dolphins' offense immediately, while Goedert projects to stand in Zach Ertz's shadow a bit more in terms of flashy stats.
