GAA club of Meath man Sean Cox release statement following Anfield attack

Liverpool's midfield resources are stretched heading into the final games of the season, with Emre Can and Adam Lallana also now out injured. His family have been informed.

"Liverpool Football Club is shocked and appalled after a Liverpool supporter was left in a critical condition having been attacked prior to the Champions League fixture against AS Roma", the club said on their website.

The 53-year-old victim, believed to be a Liverpool fan, was being treated for his injuries.

One supporter was seen motionless on the road and BBC Sport footage showed another fan carrying a hammer.

Detective Inspector Paul Speight urged anyone with information to contact police. Whatever game plan they come up with, it's not just about stopping one player, they've got three players who, at any time, can run past you, slip a cute pass in or do something ridiculous.

Roma have now moved to acknowledge the incident, saying that the attack - by a "small minority" of fans - had brought "shame" on the club. Police are also investigating the use of flares outside the ground which were set off as the team coaches arrived at the ground.

"Officers are appealing to anyone with information, or mobile phone footage, to contact our social media desk via Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook Merseyside Police CC". We are a team who will not think about these five goals that we scored today.

He told the Sky Sports: "Depending on what Liverpool do in the Champions League, if they do go on and win it, when you look at Cristiano Ronaldo, he's saved much of his best work for the Champions League".

"We've conceded two and given them a bit of a chance".

Liverpool's English full back Trent Alexander-Arnold has hailed praise for his side's attacking trio after their impressive performance against AS Roma on Tuesday. "It'll be hard, we have done it once before and they will know that they can not afford to underestimate us", he said.

However, a statement from Liverpool confirmed his season for club and country is now over.
