7 independent shops that are celebrating Record Store Day 2018

Conceived as at a gathering of independent record store owners, Record Store Day, now in its 11th year, has spread this celebration of the unique culture of mom-and-pop corner record shops to more than 1,400 stores in the US, and thousands of similar stores internationally.

A Record Store Day participating store is defined as a brick and mortar retailer whose main primary business focuses on full time, stand alone physical store locations, with a major commitment to music retail, and whose company is independently owned, and not publicly traded. Obviously, the most important thing for RSD when working with ambassadors is finding an artist who genuinely cares about supporting independent record stores.

The first official Record Store Day was held in 2008.

On Sat., April 21, music fans throughout Manhattan (and the world) will pay homage and a visit to their favorite independent music proprietors in celebration of Record Store Day. "Patti Smith did Horses at the State Theatre, that was just fantastic, and so I think there is something to be said for touching, feeling, walking into a record store".

The initial plan was to close the store Saturday, on Record Store Day.

Back when Record Store Day began, Jon Lambert never imagined the event would be such a hit with collectors. Shops receive a limited quantity of special releases, many of which are available only during this event.

"It's by far the busiest day of the year for me".

"I got lots of stuff", Breasseale said. "It's definitely helpful to record stores, and it's cool that people get excited about it", says Kellerman. You may have to stand in a few lines tomorrow, and elbow through a bunch of hipsters to get what you want, but it should all be worth it in the end.

Vinyl made up 14 percent of all physical album sales previous year, which, clearly, isn't close to sales for CDs - and says nothing about listening via streaming. Mile Long Records, 350 W. Front St.in downtown Wheaton, will open at 10 a.m. - two hours earlier than usual - with exclusive releases.

"We were instantly exposed to a community of people that appreciate art and vision, and it shaped and molded our view on our local music community", he said.

"This was a great way to start bringing the medium to a larger audience", he said.

"We have about 50 exclusives this year to sell", Hanson said.

"(This is) giving people a reason to actually come out and physically shop", Yelin said. Anything that gets people into record bars and browsing through records and discovering new music, rediscovering old music and feeling what it feels like, not just downloading or streaming, I think it's a very big part of it. "It can be a risky habit", says Kellerman, who uses a spare room in his home to store his vinyl stash. "In the last few years we've managed to successfully take down all releases listed by United Kingdom sellers in the run up the day, which has really helped curb the opportunity for sellers to rack up excessively high prices before the event itself". The store brought out over 800 used records for customers to purchase. As always, everything is limited, and not everything will be available at every store, but... The organization Record Store Day promotes independent record stores year-round with events, special releases, and other fun activities.
