CBS made sure to give viewers plenty of Tiger coverage as the four-time Masters victor competed at Augusta National for the first time since 2015. "His name is etched in history, and I'm sure he's going to carry everything that he went through today and go into Paris and try and win a Ryder Cup on European soil". "And neither one would have surprised me".
This has become a familiar lament for Fowler, who now lugs around the unwanted baggage as the best player without a title in one of golf's biggest events. Fowler finished at 14 under, while Spieth, the 2015 Masters victor, finished at 14 under. It's going to keep stacking on as the years go by as he doesn't win this one.
"The Reeds lived and died with every shot on the back nine, hooting and hollering at the TV". "And then when I did get some opportunities I didn't take advantage of them".
Jordan Spieth did his part, too, to make Reed earn it. The 27-year-old Texan who makes no apologies for his words or his deeds needs now to not apologize for his play, either. And he was once caught on the course chastising himself for a bad hole and using an anti-LGBT slur, saying: "Nice f--ing three-putt, you f--ing f--".
He didn't flinch when Spieth briefly pulled even with him at 14-under Sunday. "And I peaked at it four times over the course of my career, and it's tiring".
A thrilling final round of the Masters involving some of the game's top young stars answered some questions, reaffirmed perceptions and dismantled a few myths.
Spieth's tee shot at the 18th was listed as having traveled 177 yards after catching a tiny limb of the towering pine to the left.
McIlroy made up a five-shot deficit in eight holes when he chipped in for eagle on the par-5 eighth.
Fowler did his best with three birdies in a four-hole stretch, and the 8-footer on the final hole.
"I heard roars", Spieth continued. I tried so hard to hit the ideal shots, that going into this week, I was just like, hey, it's golf. Sunday will provide just the latest test of how Fowler's game, and his nerve, holds up under the highest level of scrutiny. That point, I knew as long as there wasn't just any catastrophic implosions coming in, that was going to be basically between Rickie and I. "But it was a phenomenal day".
"Everybody really likes battling Patrick, because he loves it so much and eats it up", said Spieth, who has a win, two seconds and a third in five Masters starts. That included Jon Rahm, the 23-year-old from Spain, whose chances ended when he went after the flag on the par-5 15th and came up short in the water. He finished third at 13-under par after he was passed by Fowler.
This one felt different than all the others.
And finally it was Fowler's turn. On the first, where he played pinball with a number of cathedral pines after an errant tee-shot, and again on the fifth and the eighth, his drives went right.
According to Ryan, before a title match, Reed's Augusta State teammates approached a player from Georgia Tech and told him, "We want to win the national title, but we hope you kick the s-- out of Patrick Reed". My family and I believe that we need to go out there and I can win the golf tournament. "To actually finally be sitting down and have my first major be the green jacket, and to be able to sit here wearing it, it's a surreal moment for me and it's something that I'll never forget".
