Only two clubs had previously overturned at least a three-goal first-leg deficit in the Champions League - Deportivo La Coruna beat AC Milan 4-0 after losing the opening leg 4-1 in the 2004 quarterfinals and Barcelona routed Paris Saint-Germain 6-1 after losing the first game 4-0 in last season's round of 16.
However, Liverpool's in-form forward Mohamed Salah put the result to bed when he scored a crucial away goal 56th minute before Roberto Firmino struck a second to secure a stunning 5-1 win on aggregate.
Edin Dzeko opened the scoring for the hosts and Daniele De Rossi added their second from the penalty spot before Kostas Manolas sent the Stadio Olimpico into hysterics with a late third to seal passage to the semifinals.
The second goal came in the 58th minute as Dzeko was pulled down inside the box by Pique and the subsequent penalty was scored by Mr. Roma, De Rossi.
His away goal had given Roma a glimmer of hope, and his sixth-minute strike kick-started a memorable night. However in truth the scoreline had flattered the Catalan giants on home turf, Roma unlucky in the extreme to have conceded four after a valiant performance. This wonderful goal that we served them on a plate.
Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, City made the early inroad they needed when Raheem Sterling burst away and crossed for Gabriel Jesus to sweep past Loris Karius after only two minutes.
This goal filled Roma's players with encouragement and they went close on the 23th minute.
"When it comes from Milner it is not offside, and we go to half-time 2-0".
Barcelona have crashed out of the Champions League after a shock 3-0 defeat to Roma on Tuesday evening. He was booked for a cynical foul to stop a Roma counter-attack and had one final chance at the end but could not nudge the ball past Alisson.
Veteran midfielder Danielle De Rossi stepped up to blast the ball in the top corner, beating Ter Stegen hands down.
It nearly ended in shambles for Roma in stoppage time, with Alisson racing off his line to try to beat Pique to a long ball over the top, only for it to fall to Ousmane Dembele by the right sideline, some 40 yards out with nobody in goal.
Alongside Manchester City, Barcelona were one of the favourite to win this year's Champions League, but we will see semi-finals featuring Liverpool and Roma instead.
