They might have dominated in terms of possession, but the Italians couldn't find a breakthrough in their World Cup qualifier against Sweden and therefore failed in their attempts, losing 1-0 on aggregate.
"If you want your country to do well, as everyone says, bring a positive light into it. Make the boys go off to the World Cup with clear heads, knowing everyone's behind them, everyone's with them".
Just 90 minutes of worldwide football remains before the Three Lions boss names his World Cup squad, with one of the summer's most high-profile absentees proving the final test on Tuesday evening at a sold-out Wembley.
In the first of the Three Lions' two friendlies, the academy product rose for his country and put in a match winning performance as he grabbed his first senior worldwide goal.
"It's not too late for anybody", Southgate said.
"There are 31 or 32 players that will be in contention and no-one knows what will happen over the next few weeks", said the manager. We are controlling the tempo of the play more. "An obvious handball and stuff like that then maybe...but we have to get on with it". We want to build on the performance in Holland.
Umenyiora added: 'Football is pretty much my first love so to be able to talk to these guys is going to be an fantastic experience'.
"Jack will play in goal".
"At the beginning of the week we chose to give both a game for the experience", Southgate said in a press conference.
Southgate could make lots of changes to the starting XI in Amsterdam, with the likes of Dele Alli, Ashley Young, and Jamie Vardy likely to play from the outset, Lewis Cook to earn his first cap, and although the system is set to be unchanged, the defensive line-up could also be very different.
AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, 19, is expected to take over from Gianluigi Buffon, who came out of worldwide retirement to play in the previous friendly.
Southgate was unable to name tonight's captain during yesterday's pre-match press conference as he had not finalised his line-up, but Raheem Sterling's place alongside him at Tottenham's training ground suggested he will be involved.
England's lack of goals without Kane continues to be a concern for Southgate. Before the new manager is announced, caretaker manager Luigi Di Biagio will look to show his successor just how good the upcoming generation of players are.
The young prodigy's career has been on the up this season, both on the domestic and the global stage, with Claude Puel and England U-21s' manager Aidy Boothroyd now starting to show more faith in him.
"We've got to give them the freedom to grow and improve and learn together".
