Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS with two fingerprint sensors announced

The chip is a competitor to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and not the newer Snapdragon 845 (which has the Cortex A75/A55/DynamIQ/Adreno 630), which does leave the P20 series with a disadvantage in terms of performance. RAM is 4GB on the P20 and 6GB on the Pro - we've seen bigger from other manufacturers, but size isn't the only factor.

One thing worth noting about the Huawei P20 Pro is how much of a departure it is from its predecessor. It sports a 5.8-inch LCD notched display with a resolution of 1080 x 2244 pixels.

The upper bezel has also been made thinner and houses the notch, a feature introduced in the iPhone X that has already been adopted by several brands.

Huawei's P Smart and the Honor 9 Lite are very similar handsets, but the latter costs less and has a better front camera.

Both devices share the same overall design, however, and that means a small notch is present for the selfie camera and earpiece speaker. Huawei has added features such as four-way autofocus with the help of PDAF, Laser, Contrast and Depth direction.

The front camera is a massive upgrade from last year's P10 with the 24-megapixel lens.

The Huawei P20 is powered by a 3400mAh battery. On the rear, the Huawei P20 Pro sports a 40MP RGB primary sensor, an 8MP telephoto sensor, and a 20MP monochrome sensor. Globally, it will come in five colours - Black, Midnight Blue, Pink Gold, Champagne Rose and Twilight - although availability of these models differs across the markets, the company said.

The design of the P20 and P20 Pro has certainly been improved with a slim glass and metal frame, 7.65mm thin for the P20 and 7.8mm thin for the P20 Pro, housing the phone's attractive big display. That, combined with an aperture of f/1.8 on the RGB camera and f/1.6 on the mono camera, should mean excellent low-light shots. These are combined to offer 40 megapixels of resolution, unheard of for a smartphone, and a 5x optical zoom lens.

Huawei claims that the P20 Pro has a highly-sensitive image sensor, which lets it take photos in extremely dark conditions. It weighs 183g and is 8.5mm at its thickest. The phone is also IP67 dust- and water-resistant. This option is available for both devices, and here's hoping I'll get one of those to review.

The standard P20 comes with two rear cameras - a 12-megapixel colour camera and a 20-megapixel monochrome camera.

The P20 Pro utilizes AI Stabilisation for this special handheld long exposure mode, which avoids the need for a tripod.

It's 2018's most interesting smartphone to date.

The Kirin 970 chipset from the Mate 10 Pro is back. It features a glossy finish at the back.

The USP of the smartphone, however, is the triple rear camera setup. On the front, the device has a 16MP camera.

Were you hoping to find the fingerprint reader under the display?

Launching on Android Oreo with EMUI layered over the top and offering plenty of customisation and additional features, this still feels like an Android phone, which a few years ago Huawei phones didn't always do.
