The 3-seed Michigan Wolverines (31-7) had their best game of the NCAA Tournament and easily advanced to the Elite 8 after defeating the Texas A&M Aggies, 99-72, this past Thursday night.
EVERYBODY SHOOTS: Wagner isn't the only outside shooter in maize and blue: Eight Wolverines hit a 3-pointer against the Aggies, and MI had 14 total 3-pointers. Florida State owns a 5-4 record against ranked opponents this season, and they are now averaging 80.9 points, good for 35th in the nation.
The ring on the right hand of Texas A&M's coach commemorating the 2011 national title game win over Notre Dame did the job. They make fewer than 69% of their attempts, which ranks 283 nationally. We believe in that philosophy. This is a bunch of guys that are connected.
EVERYBODY SCORES: Florida State's impressive offensive balance showed up again while the Seminoles beat Gonzaga with just one double-digit scorer.
Florida State is 3-11 SU and 4-10 ATS in its past 14 games against the Big Ten.
"I think that's one of the most ridiculous phrases that I've heard, football school, basketball school", Hamilton said Friday afternoon, the day before his ninth-seeded Seminoles face No. 3 seed MI for the right to advance to the Final Four next weekend in San Antonio. I feel that at every school several sports have maybe had more success than others. "We're always the underdog". I said if this kid's good, I'm going to give him a scholarship. "We had talked about being humble, but we didn't come out level-headed".
Carter, the national freshman of the year, had five points on 2-of-9 shooting at halftime before breaking loose for 32 in the final two quarters. In mid-December, when she broke the Aggies' single-game scoring record with 46 points, Carter had the final shot in a 75-74 road win over USC.
"We're 18 strong and we really don't care", Angola said. They shot a blistering 14-of-24 from three-point range, turned the ball over just seven times and scored a silly 1.38 points per possession. And they just so happen to be facing a team that struggled on defense. Tyler Davis, the Aggies' star center, was blown past and exposed by Michigan's guards throughout the matchup, and his size and reach wasn't enough to make up for the speed discrepancy. He's had some subpar games, but was picked up by Zavier Simpson or Muhammad Ali Abdur-Rahkman. They have not lost since falling to Northwestern 61-52 on February 6.
Speaking of Abdur-Rahkman, Hamilton said he is the glue for the Wolverines (31-7). "It's a challenge. We pride ourselves on not turning it over".
The game looked to be in good shape for the Aggies as Kolek handed the ball to reliever Nolan Hoffman to start the eighth. "I think everyone had that confidence today".
Both teams stress defense. Now the Seminoles will be tested by a team that ranked third in defensive efficiency in the kenpom.com rankings. MI beat No. 14 Montana, 61-47, and then narrowly escaped sixth-seeded Houston with a, 64-63, victory on the opening weekend of the tournament.
"Their defense is terrific".
"We've been working on some defense (against Carter)", Notre Dame guard Jackie Young said. "They prioritize it, and they have great length to do it. When everybody is locked into that, we can take ourselves all the way to the top".
