To voice concerns on gun laws, Halifax students walk out of class

FCHS conducted one of their mandatory safety drills prior to 10 a.m., and then allowed students to remain outside if they wished for 17 minutes following.

The demonstrations addressed gun violence and made a call for reform.

Students at Douglas Freeman High School plan to continue demonstrations on April 20th, which happens to be the 19th anniversary of the shooting at Columbine High School. This is a public health crisis and it's appalling.
During a student-organized walkout Wednesday at East Mountain High School, Anastasia Strader, holds a sign with the names of victims from the Valentine's Day school shooting in Florida. It doesn't make sense to me for an average citizen to own one of these weapons.
But he said he strongly disagrees with the idea of banning assault rifles, saying they can be useful when confronted with multiple burglars or other criminals. Walk-outs were also scheduled at other schools, including Hoosick Falls Central School in NY and Burr and Burton Academy in Manchester, but a snow day put those plans on hold. MA has the nation's lowest rate of gun deaths and some of the strictest gun laws, but students called on legislators for more - such as the so-called "red flag" law to let household members petition courts to temporarily remove guns from people who pose risks.
