Cardinals release star safety Tyrann Mathieu

Of New York's core of safeties, which consists of Landon Collins, Darian Thompson, Andrew Adams and Ryan Murphy, only Thompson is a free safety and struggled at times during his first full season. One of the biggest reasons why the Cardinals released him was due to his injury history and well, the savings they would get back by cutting him. They prefer to build their team through the draft and retain their own players.

The Cards, however, were dealing with a contract based on his excellent 2015 season, which Mathieu signed in training camp before the 2016 season.

Known as The Honey Badger, Mathieu was a transcendent defensive back collegiately for the LSU Tigers and for a few years with the Cardinals before suffering a torn ACL in 2015. I was supposedly one of the best players on my team.

On the Cardinals, Mathieu would reinforce that reputation by quickly becoming a fan favorite and a team leader in his five seasons with Arizona.

Washington will have Alex Smith as their starting quarterback in 2018, while after his departure from Kansas City, the Chiefs locked down a young receiver in Sammy Watkins on a three-year, $48m deal.

"I want to THANK the entire cardinals organization for everything they have done for me over the past 5 years". His presence would make the need for safety and linebacker less being able to play either position.

Mathieu reportedly would have had a cap number of $14.1 million, which is more money than Arizona wanted to allot toward him.

Suh and Mathieu won't come cheap like the players Dallas has recently targeted.

From a football standpoint, the Jets run an identical defensive scheme to that of Arizona's - another connection to Bowles - so Mathieu wouldn't have too much to learn. I want to be a part of winning culture, where you feel that all the time. They just lost their safety, Ron Parker ... I know those guys had a great defense.
