Villanova (30-4), which won the Big East Tournament championship just before Virginia won the ACC title in the same city Saturday, is the top seed in the East Regional, joining regular-season champion Xavier (28-5) to give the Big East half of the four No. 1 seeds.
With the best defensive team in the country on the horizon, North Carolina will certainly need to shoot the ball better than they did in their first matchup with Virginia, and better than they did Friday night in a 74-69 win over the Blue Devils.
The No. 13 Spartans will play No. 4 Gonzaga in the round of 64. Duke is ranked No. 5.
The Southeastern Conference comes in second with eight.
Davidson's run to the Atlantic 10 Tournament title apparently stole a bid that otherwise would have gone to Notre Dame.
It was the second time in three years they've beaten West Virginia (24-10) in the title game. The NCAA's Selection Committee chooses where each team will go by first ranking the top-16 teams in the tournament.
"So it's whatever, we'll take whatever we get". "Maybe it just took a minute to get in a groove".
"They get up on you and then they put pressure on you thinking you have to come down, and you're thinking you have to get a quick shot to try to get that lead back", said UNC point guard Joel Berry. "I want them to enjoy it", Odom said. "There's definitely a mental part of it where you sort of feel safe with it on".
"But I really like what he does". North Carolina had impressive wins over Miami and Duke in the ACC Tournament however, lost to Virginia by a 71-63 margin in the finals this past Saturday.
Virginia heads back to Charlottesville to await its seeding in the NCAA tournament, all but assured of the No. 1 overall seed when the field of 68 is announced Sunday. "And we won there". If we try to play the flawless game and play as close as we can possibly play to that, then we'll have a chance to win. We've showed Ty can make some plays. "But we had those opportunities", he continued.
"We tried a lot of different things in man throughout the season", Smith said. Against a sound Virginia squad, forcing turnovers won't be easy as the Cavaliers lead the country in fewest turnovers per game.
"Of course to advance, we went to an Elite 8, nearly got to a Final Four, but the NCAA Tournament, you want to do as well as you can in that", Bennett said. Leading the way for the Bison was Garrison Mathews who had 33 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block. The Cavaliers defense held Clemson to 34.7 shooting from the field and 20 percent from 3-point range.
"He started out slow, but he shot it well", Boeheim said.
However, three free throws and a Williams three-pointer cut the Cavaliers' lead to four at halftime. Boeheim expects that Sidibe will be fully healthy for his sophomore year after needed treatment on his ailing knee, which Boeheim said does not project to be "a big fix".
N.C. Central will play in a "First Four" game Wednesday against Texas Southern. "I think that's the most by any team". "It's playing Virginia on the last day".
"But my team's getting better", the coach added.
"We've always felt like we're not just one guy, not just two guys".
There's one more strength of the Tar Heels gone.
Which finally brings us to college basketball and the North Carolina Tar Heels. Villanova was a No. 1 past year and has consistently been a high seed under coach Jay Wright. "They're not going to get in the tournament and change who they are".
