After the Blue Devils (26-6) finished their game against the Tar Heels with a barrage of 3-pointers, they shot 8-of-17 from beyond the arc Thursday.
"We've got to be the most confusing [team on the bubble] and the one that will be discussed the most with how many games a first-team All-American missed", Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey said.
Farrell scored 22 points for the 10th-seeded Irish (20-13), who overcame a terrible start in extending their late push to reach the NCAA Tournament. After the game, head coach Mike Krzyzewski said Carter has been nursing a foot injury and has not practiced this week, and he was unclear about Carter's status for the ACC tournament semifinals.
Justin Robinson was one of the leading scorers for Tech, scoring 15 points in addition to snagging two rebounds and seven assists. The Irish and Blue Devils tip off at 7:00 PM on ESPN2.
"But I feel good about our team and I feel good about our kids and they'll show up and they'll play hard at the end of the day". The teams have split decisions, each rallying in the second halves to secure home-court victories, Carolina 82-78 in Chapel Hill on February 8 and Duke 74-64 in Durham. His three from the right diagonal over Colson came with 13 minutes left in regulation and extended Duke's lead to 13 points. Notre Dame ranks 109th in rebounds allowed per game (33.8).
The Irish will look for that toughness this evening in their matchup with 2-seed Duke, who beat Notre Dame 88-66 in Durham as the Irish were of course missing Colson and Farrell.
This contest figures to be a high-scoring affair as two of the NCAA's top offenses square off. Duke ranks third with 120.7 points per 100 possessions and Notre Dame is 37th (113.5).
Farrell's 3-pointer with 13:55 left first ignited the closing run that, initially, Virginia Tech met shot-for-shot.
Duke extended it to 80-62 with 4:30 remaining, and there would be no big rally for the Fighting Irish on this night.
Duke is 7-0 at Barclays Center, including last year's four-game run to win the first ACC Tournament held in Brooklyn.
Despite the injuries, Notre Dame never missed a beat until the ACC Tournament final. Since he returned, Notre Dame went 3-2, the two losses coming to two teams that may well end up as No. 1 seeds.
The comeback started with Bonzie Colson's first three of the game. No matter what the Irish did, they could not contain him. Notre Dame also earned 15 total wins against the RPI Top-50, which also leads the nation.
Louisville: The Cardinals (20-13) had two chances to make their case and wasted both, leaving them in a tenuous spot.
First, Trevon Duval is a player who has all the tools to be a great defender.
The Irish have made the tournament in seven of the last eight years. They also have three players that shoot over 40% from the three-point line.
After getting snubbed for ACC Coach of the Year honors, Notre Dame's Muffet McGraw was named the national coach of the year by USA Today on Wednesday. No. 12 North Carolina (24-9) won the tournament in 2016.
