Olympic results 2018: Canada wins men's hockey bronze medal

German tourists planning a trip to Canada received some tongue-in-cheek advice from their government Friday after their unheralded ice hockey team dumped mighty Canada out of the Winter Olympics. The David versus Goliath gold-medal game between Germany and the Russians is also a matchup of two of the closest teams in the Olympics. After losing 3-0 to Russian Federation in their semi-final, the Czechs have already declared they want the bronze.

Losing 4-3 to the Germans in the semifinal, and being forced to stomach one of the more shocking upsets on worldwide ice in some time, Canada fell into the unwanted and precarious position that has left the hockey power vulnerable - even when choosing from a complete talent pool - too many times before.

Team Canada poses with their bronze medals after beating the Czech Republic 6-4.

But the Germans, who toppled Switzerland Sweden to get to the semifinal, were full value for the win despite a third-period wobble.

Reaching the end of one of the most meaningful journeys of their hockey lives, they could have gone one of two ways.

The 2014 version of Team Canada reportedly came with a $150-million salary cap hit.

Simply put, it's not easy playing for third, for Canada.

With the win, Canada has now medalled at three consecutive Olympics, while the Czech Republic, who won Group A and have knocked off some top competition at the tournament, suffered the disappointment of finishing off the podium.

The Russians have one gold, five silver and eight bronze medals at the Pyeongchang Games as of Friday, putting them behind Belarus and Italy on gold medals (the key measure used in Russia), and behind France on total medals.

When Derek Roy, Canada's best offensive player in the tournament, finished off a two-on-one at the 15:57 mark, the two-goal lead resulted in more inspired play and confidence. This wasn't the Canada team that won gold in 2014 in Sochi or 2010 in Vancouver with a roster stocked with National Hockey League stars.

Maybe the difference between this Canadian team and any other was the finality of it.

The Germans have 14 returning players from the worlds.

Once again there were empty seats at the 10,000-capacity Gangneung Hockey Centre. 31 seconds brought 3 goals. "We shot ourselves in the foot in the beginning of the game and we weren't able to come back from it", he added. Even the Germans on the ice may need a few hours to realize exactly what they've done, and Winnipeg native Brooks Macek said this win is huge. The first got Canada on the board when a Mat Robinson shot bounced in off of Andrew Ebbett's skate.

The Canadians scored three times in seven minutes in the first period to take a serious option on the bronze. Digging Goc's pass out from between his legs, Mauer beat Poulin from in front.

The Americans lost 5-0 to Finland that day, in a contest that was over in the second period.

While Canada tried to play a crisp, disciplined game the rest of the way, the Czechs never gave up and continued to upset the apple cart. "It's huge for us, for the players, for Russian hockey and the whole country". The number in Canada was 631,295.
