Ivanka Trump confirmed as leading U.S. delegation at Pyeongchang 2018 Closing Ceremony

Despite Chol's scheduled appearance, the worldwide media-including prominent American outlets-have remained relatively quiet about the news, instead providing North Korea with fawning coverage during the Olympics.

The White House has emphasised that the objective of her visit is to celebrate athletes' achievements, highlighting that she is a winter sports enthusiast herself.

Pyongyang that Kim Yong-chol, a North Korean official who was allegedly behind the 2010 torpedoing of South Korea's Cheonan warship that killed 46 sailors, will lead a high-level delegation to Sunday's closing ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Ivanka's visit drew comparisons with that of Kim Yo Jong, a senior officer in the Workers' Party of Korea, who softened people's sentiments towards the North with her smile and manners during her three-day visit.

She now serves as a special adviser to her father.

The South Korean government is going to great lengths to give Trump a royal welcome, especially given the precarious state of relations between Washington and Seoul as the progressive government here tries to engage North Korea while the Trump administration expounds a policy of "maximum pressure".

US Vice President Mike Pence has called Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korea's leader, "a central pillar of the most tyrannical and oppressive regime on the planet".

"Many in the US media were quick to praise North Korea's attempts at diplomacy, but in reality they just fell for North Korea's charade", one senior Trump administration official told the Free Beacon. The article said the weapons could be used to strike not only North Korean sites designated as high-priority targets, but individuals as well.

Pence did also not meet with any North Korean officials during his visit.

A flurry of sports diplomacy between the two Koreas began after the North's leader expressed a willingness to send a delegation to the Games in his New Year's Day message.

Trump is anxious to counter North Korea's charm offensive with his own show of cooperation with Moon's desire for follow-up moves to bring about reconciliation with the North.

President Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, is scheduled to lead the American delegation at Sunday's closing ceremony.

Moon in that meeting may stress the importance of U.S.

South Korean lawmakers protested Friday over a visit by a top North Korean general for the Pyeongchang Olympics, labeling him a war criminal over the 2010 sinking of a warship and calling for his execution.

That point is extremely sensitive and hard.

Trump has no plans to meet with North Korean officials or get into "substantive discussions", the official said. "My goal is to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue and solidify peace", Mr Moon told the magazine Monocle in an interview that was published yesterday. "It also suggests their intention to split public opinion in South Korea and attempt to see the potential different views between the South and the USA while superficially decorating themselves as showing magnanimous and bold sincerity".

According to the Borgen Project, a campaign against poverty, most North Koreans earn between $2 and $3 per month. Kim Jong-Un has boasted that his intercontinental ballistic missiles will soon be sophisticated enough to carry nuclear warheads to targets in the U.S. "Kim Yong-chol's visit should be immediately scrapped". Kim Jong-Un's sister no doubt has tremendous influence but is not believed to have made official demands or protests.

The report said that the White House did not elaborate its position on the North's chief delegate, who is under sanctions by the US and South Korea.
