In skiing, Shiffrin was restricted to second place in the women's combined, meaning she ended the Games with one gold and one silver - a far cry from the potential five titles she had targetted.
Still, she said she would have raced the downhill if there was still a day off before the combined as scheduled. This race - likely the last Olympic medal of her career - served as the sweet reward for years of struggle.
"The challenge mentally is not to get back to the level you were before but - to take the new things you learnt through your injury and match that together with the person you were before", she said after training this week.
United States' Lindsey Vonn competes in the women's combined downhill at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Jeongseon, South Korea, Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018. "I am really proud of this medal, and I know he is, too".
Gisin, third-fastest after the opening downhill, displayed nerves of steel in the slalom to clock an aggregate time of 2 minutes, 20.90 seconds.
"I wish I could tell you that I was going to race in four years and be a competitive threat but unfortunately it's just not the way it is", Vonn said.
Gisin was able to hold off Shiffrin, who's one of the world's best slalom skiers. "But it reminds me of something that [American skier] Buddy Werner used to say. And she had a wonderful career - and she is still "having" because it's not over".
Vonn said she has skied only three slalom training runs since Thanksgiving. Her outing in the super-G in Pyeongchang, won by Czech snowboard crossover Ester Ledecka, saw her finish sixth after a big mistake at the bottom of the course cost her at least a podium spot.
"She made me believe that you can grab the stars and that's what I did today".
Vonn fulfilled her promise, racing to the podium and falling just short of victory.
"I really need some time to understand this - I'm so happy". I'm trying to enjoy the moment as much as I can and I am thankful to share this race with such wonderful teammates.
"During Sochi I was on the couch watching the Olympics after my second ACL surgery. And I tried everything I could to win for him", she said, per ESPN. It shouldn't be a surprise, given that Gisin came up as a slalom racer and captured a silver medal in the combined at the world championships last February. In an interview in December, Vonn said she skied for her country, not the U.S. President.
The altered Olympic program of back-to-back race days has not helped Mikaela Shiffrin.
