Shelley Looney: Very happy and proud of them. Just hours after the US women's hockey team defeated Canada in an overtime shootout to win a gold medal, the usa men's curling team knocked off their brethren from the north in a semifinal match, 5-3, for the right to play Sweden for a gold medal.
In the shootout, Gigi Marvin and Amanda Kessel scored for the US, while Agosta and Melodie Daoust scored for Canada. The 20-year-old goalie stopped the last two Canadian shooters in the shootout in Brianne Jenner and then Meghan Agosta on her second attempt.
Members of the 1998 U.S. Olympic women's hockey team, scattered across the country (and in South Korea), texted back and forth throughout the PyeongChang Olympic women's hockey final, won 3-2 by the Americans over Canada in a shootout on Thursday. While that Olympic history isn't something the US squad necessarily enjoys reliving, in many ways, those games define the American team just as much they do the Canadians.
It was an incredibly close match throughout, with Canada leading 2-1 well into the third period, only for Team USA's Monique Lamoureux-Morando to pull it back, pushing the game into overtime.

The Shakespearean drama of a United States-Canada women's hockey final played out as if following a script Thursday at Gangneung Ice Arena. Determining a gold medal via shooting is embarrassing for the sport, something even the Americans would concede.
The Americans won the inaugural women's gold medal in 1998, but had not beaten Canada in the Olympics since.
Canada won gold at the previous four Olympics, including victories over United States of America in the 2002, 2010 and 2014 finals.
At the same time as dashing Canada's dreams of a fifth straight gold, Lamoureux-Davidson's moment of magic secured the US its first title since 1998 and avenged a heart-breaking and similarly dramatic loss last time out in Sochi.
The Americans earned an early edge, when Hilary Knight skated in front of the Canadian net and redirected a Sidney Morin shot into the goal for a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period.
That lasted only 2 minutes into the second when Haley Irwin tipped a midair pass from Turnbull over Rooney's left leg for Canada. But Kristofferson couldn't make it all the way down on the second run.
