Trump on Twitter (Feb 20) - Obama administration, America's elections, taxes

The postcard news comes in the wake of the indictment last week by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office of 13 Russians and the Internet Research Agency, a Kremlin-linked troll group, for offenses related to their alleged interference in the USA political system and the 2016 presidential election.

In December 2016, Obama issued unprecedented sanctions against Russia for Moscow's interference in the 2016 presidential election, ordering 35 Russian diplomats to leave the US, and the closure of two Russian compounds. He callously used the shooting massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School as political cover, blaming the Federal Bureau of Investigation for missing leads on the alleged shooter because the agency was "spending too much time trying to prove Russian collusion with the Trump campaign". The big social media firms must put in place requirements for paid for by disclosures on ads and do a better job of policing bots and fraudulent posting.

"I created all these pictures and posts, and the Americans believed that it was written by their people", wrote one of the defendants, Irina Kaverzina, in an email to a family member obtained by investigators.

The 37-page indictment, filed in Washington federal district court, alleged the company and individuals were engaged in a broad conspiracy with the "strategic goal of sowing discord" during the elections as early as 2014.

"This indictment serves as a reminder that people are not always who they appear to be on the internet", Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said last Friday.

Kerik's tweet was picked up by RT, the Russian government-funded news agency, in a matter of hours.

Karl asked Sanders what Trump is "specifically doing" in the wake of Mueller's announcement.

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has dismissed the allegations in the indictment as "just blabber" saying no details are provided. But how the law reaches American co-conspirators is less certain, and the special counsel's theory of the case, pleading the campaign finance aspect of the case through conspiracy-to-defraud, may allow more securely for the prosecution of American actors. That was preposterous, Democrats said.

Irrespective of efforts that were made in 2016 by foreign powers, it is the universal conclusion of our intelligence communities that none of those efforts had any effect on the outcome of the 2016 election.

Social-media companies weren't the only ones subverted in the influence campaign. Some of the money used to fund the Russian operation went through fraudulent bank accounts set up to disguise where the money was coming from. Prosecutors say the accounts were opened using fake identities to help bypass PayPal's security measures.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer outlined the complexity of preventing abuse.

When people create certain political ads, Facebook will send a postcard via USA mail to a physical address.

The problem with Goldman's tweets, basically, was that they seemed to contradict the actual work done by Mueller and his investigative team.

"Since the enactment of the CAATSA legislation, we estimate that foreign governments have abandoned planned or announced purchases of several billion dollars in Russian defense acquisitions", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said on January 29, using an acronym for the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act. Facebook was used extensively to circulate information and communicate ideas.
