On paper, Bayern Munich has to be considered the favourite in this one.
Both times it was Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets who was closest to the ball.
However, Barca secured a crucial away goal 15 minutes later, as Andreas Christensen's risky ball across his own box landed at the feet of Andres Iniesta, with the Spaniard pulling it back for the incoming Lionel Messi to drive home at the near post with aplomb.
He is not the same as Costa or Drogba, with Morata lacking the intensity and nuisance value of the pair of them, but he knows how to lead the line and hold up the ball for the likes of Hazard, Pedro and Willian to run onto.
But despite these difficulties Fabregas and team-mates stuck to it and rode out wave after wave of first half pressure from Barcelona. Chelsea fans, however, are clinging on to many coincidental superstitions. In that, perhaps, it was helped by Barcelona's shape.
Conte's future has been the subject of debate this season and following the Barcelona match, his side face a key game against Manchester United in the league on Sunday.
"It won't be easy, we must be realistic, we are talking about Barcelona".
As we know, the former Juventus and Italy boss is an absolute nutter and when Willian's stunner hit the back of the net, he was absolutely loving it.
"There's no individual that can deal with him". And then, seizing on his one real chance, he scored the decisive goal.
Lionel Messi, FC Barcelona: Although Messi has faced Chelsea plenty of times, he's never scored against the London club.
He has been in superb form this season, but he is surrounded by a few average players.
But Tuesday was all about the 29-year-old.
"I was a bit unlucky but we have to keep working and look forward to the other game". Yet still Barcelona didn't heed the warning. He calmly shaped a low shot around a clutch of players and into the bottom corner.
The last meeting between the two clubs came in the 2012 UEFA Champions League semi final second leg. Chelsea drew 2-2 on the night at Camp Nou and made it to the final after winning 3-2 on aggregate.
Sixteen minutes into the game, Besiktas were reduced to 10 men after Domagoj Vida was shown a straight red card. Incredibly, the Argentine wizard has been kept off the score sheet in each of his eight Champions League appearances against Chelsea. From then on it was just a question of how many the hosts would score.
