Mikaela Shiffrin relaxed, fast and focused on final Olympic event

Shiffrin, the overall World Cup leader, planned to compete in the downhill as she worked to become an all-around medal threat, not simply a specialist in the technical events. But then she backed off Monday, finishing third and saying she didn't want to win the run in order to psyche out her competitors.

I'm so glad Vonn isn't letting the trolls get to her.

"That run today was much more what I was looking for as far as being relaxed goes".

Mikaela Shiffrin has withdrawn from the ladies' downhill event at the Winter Olympics. And to those bullies out there, Vonn was undeterred.

"Everything's great. I feel like a million bucks", she said with a smile.

"I've tried not to think of it as my last Olympic downhill, just focus on the moment, the right here and the right now".

Lindsey Vonn, 33, isn't listening to her "bullies".

She is not retiring just yet though.

"It's 99.9 per cent sure I won't", the American said, speaking in Pyeongchang. But who knows? Maybe something will come out and they'll fix my knee up and I'll be like Robo knee and I'll ski for like 10 more years.

American Alice McKennis, Italy's Nadia Fanchini and Federica Brignone crashed out in spectacular fashion after all three led the first three intermediate times as the sun-kissed course offered hope for the late runners.

Also Wednesday, the women's figure-skating competition starts with the short program. "But I always try to remember that it's people talking behind the computer and they're going to say anything".

The favourite remains inevitably Shiffrin, 22 years of age, even if but the Swiss Wendy Holdener, the reigning world champion, can play a spoilsport.

Small competes with funding of $15,000 a year from the Olympic Winter Institute and has also received a special grant from the IOC of about $30,000 over 18 months.

Three second-period goals helped the United States advance to the quarterfinals, defeating Slovakia 5-1 Tuesday.

Ryan Donato scored two goals for the U.S.in the victory, with James Wisniewski adding a goal and an assist. They'll need some offensive output on Wednesday for a shot at the semifinals.

USA champion Bradie Tennell has taken the lead in the women's short program at the Olympics. The U.S. did not qualify a women's relay team for the Games. Since claiming silver in this event in Sochi, he has won a medal in the distance at each of the last four world championships, including back-to-back world titles in 2014 and 2015.

So when Vonn failed to medal (whether or not that would be required for a White House invitation), Trump's supporters took that as motivation for mockery. If she wins a medal in PyeongChang, she'll be the oldest woman in Alpine skiing history to climb an Olympic podium.

South Korea has won five of the seven gold medals awarded in this event and that trend is expected to continue in PyeongChang.
