New Zealand advance to final despite two-run loss to England

Colin Munro and Martin Guptill were involved in a 78-run opening stand off just 39 balls. 32 sixes were also hit in the match- the most in a single T20I game.

In just his second appearance for New Zealand, the 23-year-old had made his way to 16 from 13 balls before copping the brute of a delivery.

Veteran batsman Aaron Finch returned last start in Melbourne and showcased his flexibility by producing the finishing touches of the run chase with some fireworks at No. 5.

With this knock, the opener broke Brendon McCullum's record of the fastest ever century by a Kiwi batsman.

Set a mammoth 244 to win, the visitors achieved their target with seven balls to spare as David Warner (59 off 24 balls) and D'Arcy Short (76 off 44) ran riot. Ross Taylor hit two sixes in an 18-run final over from Tye to propel New Zealand to their equal-highest T20 score.

He's joined in the bowling ranks by tweaker Ish Sodhi, as well as Trent Boult and Tim Southee, who struggled in Friday's five-wicket loss to Australia.

Guptill finished with 105 from 54 deliveries, hitting nine sixes and in the procerss becoming the leading runscorer in global T20 cricket - and Munro scored even quicker, racking up 76 in just 33 balls.

Tye and Kane Richardson picked up two wickets apiece, while Billy Stanlake and Ashton Agar chipped in with one wicket each.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, a visibly jubilant David Warner said, "What a fantastic effort by the guys".

"We brought it slightly back with the ball, especially after how New Zealand were playing".

"I'm not left-handed", he said.

"It was a fantastic surface, so 240 or so might not be enough in the final..."

"It was a very good surface, small ground and I guess a game like that was bound to happen here at some point", New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said.

For the hosts, it was a broken display in the field with no answers to Australia's assault.

"As it was coming through the air, it was coming towards me and I was like, 'Yeah this is on, '" he says.

"To come in here and play at Eden Park is one of the more daunting tasks as an global side", Finch said on Thursday.
