Nathan Chen Makes a Comeback With an Unprecedented 6 Quads

Even though he ended out of the medals, Chen's clean landing of an unprecedented six quads - the first time anybody has done so in the Olympics - helped him vault from 17th to fifth place on the weight of the free skate. "I'm really trying to win and do a good run every time but I didn't really realize that this really can happen", added the snowboard parallel world champion.

Chen's US teammates, Vincent Zhou and Adam Rippon, finished sixth and 10th, respectively. Despite falling twice in the free skate portion at Sochi, he was able to take home the gold after his competitors made mistakes. This winter, the pressure almost got the best of him, when he was heard muttering, "I don't want to go" while in a vehicle heading to a competition venue.

Showing a similar grit and determination to Hanyu, Uno turned the program around and delivered an emotional, committed performance to Puccini's "Turandot". He scored nearly nine points higher on his free skate than Hanyu, who landed four quads. "But when I went out to compete, I was not so nervous anymore and I tried my best", Jin said.

Countryman Shoma Uno scored 306.90 to take silver, while Spain's Javier Fernandez secured bronze with 305.24 points. Later, Zhou followed with a 192.16, using five quads to put himself just below Chen on the overall leaderboard.

The sequence of quads in his program was quad lutz, quad flip/double toe combination, another quad flip, quad toe/triple toe combination (which garnered 17.63 points), another quad toe and a quad salchow.

"I think honestly putting down a rough short program, and being so low in the placement just took the pressure away from me", Chen said.

The event will likely be the Olympic farewell of Japan's Noriaki Kasai, at 45 the first man to have competed in eight winter Olympics. "But I'm really happy with what I did here".

"Just a mix of emotions", he said.

Still, Rippon's lovely, clean routines and outspoken political actions this year won Rippon more media attention than his peers, and his name was again the top trending term on Twitter after his routine, as it has been after each skate in the Olympic games.

Although Great Britain only has four medals, ranking them No. 16, the Brits witnessed an Olympic first on Sunday when Isabel Atkin won the country's first-ever medal for skiing.

The two-time USA champion - widely regarded as his nation's best hope for a figure skating medal in Pyeongchang - had succumbed to the pressure and massive expectations in Friday's short program. When things are good for him, I'm doing badly, and that pressures me to work harder to keep up. "Because I had time off from skating, I was able to do a lot of planning and thinking about strategy". "Now I can sleep, I can rest and I can really enjoy it with my people around me".
